I have scalp infection after lice treatment

Posted By Georgette (Florida) on 12/31/2013

I had head lice back in July, used many different products to get rid of these critters, finally in Ocotber they were gone, since then my scalp has been burning, itching. I noticed on the hair shafts close to the scalp I have build up sebum and now my scalp is all white and feels tight and dry. I have been to several dermatolist, one said it was soberrheic dermatitis another said I had some folliculitus. I have tried many different over the counter remedies, Selsum blue, Nuetrgena T/Gel, Ketozone, Head and Shoulders, nothing seems to take the itch away or the white film on my scalp, there is not flaking. Also I have used tropical steriods from the dermatologist.

Dear Georgette,

Well, I am sorry you have had so much trouble with this!

There are a lot of natural things you can try. I think the first thing I would try would be a mixture of castor oil and extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil. Mix equal parts together. Carefully massage it into your scalp and cover with a shower cap and towel and leave in a couple of hours or overnight. Be careful not to tangle the hair. You can coat all the hair, but especially the scalp. The castor oil and coconut oil are both gentle and nourishing to the skin of the scalp. After 2 hours, or the next day, wash hair. (Probably twice.) You could do this every few days or once a week.

Try to find a way to clean your hair as gently as possible. Maybe just use baking soda to wash. (Lots of posts about it on Earth Clinic.) This might not be enough though to get the castor/coconut oil out of your hair.

Also, you can take 4 capsules of turmeric twice a day. Take it with a glass of water. Turmeric is great for inflammation and for skin conditions (and lots of other stuff, too! ) It may sound strange that something internal would help your scalp, but I have seen turmeric do amazing things for skin inflammations in my family.

Let us know how it goes. I hope you are completely cured soon.
