Help Needed for Statin Induced Insomnia

Posted By Grace (Va, USA) on 07/13/2015

I took zocor for about a year, fairly low dose. Stopped over 5 years ago because I was getting muscle pain & trusted the dr's too much. Now I still have some muscle pain and terrible insomnia. From what I have researched, these could be due to the zocor. Any suggestions for how to recover my health? I had been keeping a journal and the pain & insomnia began when I started the zocor, I just didn't put it all together. I eat mostly homegrown veggies, steamed or roasted or raw, a bit of chicken (also home grown), eggs. Exercise a good bit, am fit and should have no insomnia at all. I am taking 2 mg ambien at night, but need to get off it.

Hi Grace,

I don't have a solution to the insomnia, unfortunately, but wanted to let you know I have the exact same problem of muscle aches and insomnia, along with developing two autoimmune diseases and hypothyroidism while on various statins over many years. My Mother and sister both also had problems with statins, but we didn't connect the dots. I have also stopped the statins years ago and these problems persist. Statins may prevent one heart event over a ten year period for every 100 people who take it, a 1% success rate most likely from their anti-inflammatory action, while causing damage, sometimes permanent, to at least 10%. Who thinks that is acceptable? They only help men who have had a previous heart event. Yet they are a billion dollar money maker, an enormous con job. There is a Yahoo "Stopped our Statin" site that has been a blessing to me. Dr. Duane Graveline believes his ALS-like symptoms from statins is from the fact that they not only block CoQ10 in the mevalonate pathway, along with about five other systems along that same pathway, but also block dolichols, very important to many functions in the body. He is now walking by supplementing dolichols. I have found that listening to online guided meditations for insomnia to be somewhat helpful to fall asleep, but I usually wake up after about an hour. If you find something for sleep, please keep us informed. I have been fortunate enough to have been accepted into a Dolichol study and will report back at the end of the year if my sleep or other problems improve, if allowed. The results will be published. Best wishes.

Simvisitation (Zocor) did a number on your magnesium levels in your red blood cells. Get some magnesium oil spray from the big "A" and apply to the bottom of your feet nightly. Secondly, start taking some Epsom salt baths nightly before you go to bed while weaning off the Ambien.

Make sure your bedroom is completely dark at night. No LED lights from clocks. Sleep hygiene is very impotantl

good luck!

To Rsw and Grace...

Re SLEEP problems and Dead Sea Salts

Well, Grace asked for suggestions on helps to sleep. I've been working on that problem for years and some things seem to help. But nothing has helped permanently. I've been under a lot of extreme stress in the past ten years including death of a mate. My sleep patterns were greatly disturbed during that period and ever since rarely get a full nights sleep.

Here's something interesting that happened only last night that was very interesting. I soaked my feet in "Dead Sea Salts"... using a tablespoon in a pan full of warm water. Large enough to get my feet in. Let them soak for about 30 minutes...until the water became nearly room temp.

I did this because my left foot has had some neuropathy for the past two years...especially after I eat anything with sugar. Noticed right away the top of left foot did not have that achy pain on top that it normally does.

But also I noticed that at about 10 pm I was starting to become VERY sleepy...I could barely stay awake enough to get to bed. Then slept all night. Very unusual. ALL night.

Well, I know ONE experience is not enough to say; hey try this. But I'll do it some more and report back. And if anyone has similar "minerals"....especially Dead Sea Salts experience... please post it.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for posting this. Did you soak your feet right before bed or was it earlier in the evening? Keep us posted. If it works again for you, I'll try it, too.

Hi Dave ---

A simple Ayurvedic remedy for insomnia is oiling the feet nightly with cold pressed sesame oil, paying special attention to the soles of the feet. The oil, when massaged into the soles , will benefit all the major body organs as in reflexology.

It has helped me a lot and it assists in circulation as well.

Another remedy is hydro therapy such as cold water treading. The water should cover the calves of the legs while vigorously treading water. Then, no drying and immediately to bed. This can be done every evening and is especially useful for diabetics.

This therapy is widely used in clinic resorts in Europe.

Good Night. Om
