Cirrhosis of liver due to alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency

Hello, my boyfriend has cirrhosis of the liver due to alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency. A year ago he was on his death bed, only to find this out. In November he had a stint put in which has helped him immensely! The only problem is he gets ammonia on the brain and takes quite a lot of meds. His MELD score is now too low to qualify for a transplant. Once one has reached this point is there anyway to reverse it? Also, how effective could MSM and or DMSO be for his liver?

Thank you in advance!! Jessica

Jessica, my husband is in a similar situation. Alpha 1, low MELD, just had the TIPS done yesterday. I have found that alpha's usually have low MELD even if they are very sick.... there's a couple alpha 1 groups on Facebook... can you find us there or email me. I've just gotten in contact with a couple others... there aren't many, as it's such a rare cause. Anne
