Can Acid Reflux Be Related to Snoring and Hiccups?

Can severe acid reflux and hiatal hernia be related to snoring and excessive hiccupping?

Hello! I have read many of the comments and feedback related to different remedies for different situations. I was first diagnosed with acid reflux when I was 18 years old, I am now 29. I have tried aciphex, nexium, prevacid, prilosec, protonix, and everything else imaginable. Usually it would work for a month, sometimes 2. Then I would have to double it, then later triple it. I have gotten so frustrated over the years and my condition continues to worsen. In 2006 an EGD was performed and the hiatal hernia was discovered. Changes in diet seem to have little to no effect on me. I wake up in the middle of the night literally choking on the acid that is bubbling up into my mouth and sometimes causes me to vomit and I end up miserable for most of the night. The only relief I find is through actually chewing and swallowing 3 prilosecs, since chewing them causing it to work on contact instead of the normal time released method. Lately the pain and burning has gotten even more intense and is accompanied by severe back and upper shoulder pain, similar to the pains one gets with the flu and excessive vomiting. I tried chewable apple cider vinegar tablets and besides tasting awful, they made me throw up and I got very sick for about a week. Any suggestions? My condition has caused me much duress and concern and I am at my wits end.

As per the title of this, I have noticed right around the onset of my acid reflux, I began snoring. I never snored as a child. I know this because I grew up with 6 siblings and had I snored it would have been an object of torment as siblings can be cruel. I also heard nothing of my snoring from my first relationships and college roommates and friends. The only thing reported was that I occassionally talked in my sleep, especially if under duress. Although diagnosed at 18, it didn't become severe until I was 22. I was married at that time (I have been since divorced) and my husband suddenly began to be awakened by snoring that he never noticed before. It appeared to have happened overnight, right about the same time my GERD became severe. Another thing I have noticed is that I am often plagued by hiccups that just won't go away, and frequently acid comes up with the hiccups and puts me in misery. Is this somehow connected? I also have chronic cough which I assume is connected. What would your advice for me be?

Thank you for any suggestions you may have! The doctors don't seem to ever help or care!

I accidentally discovered, years ago, that Rolaids cures hiccups. I've since cured my indigestion problems with the watercure. I never thought about it until I read your post but I suspect you're right. I don't snore any more. I used to wake myself up, I snored so loud. And I haven't had hiccups, either. I used to get them quite often. That's very interesting...

Acid Reflux may not be entirely the cause. I had a EGD in January 08 and diagnosed with inflammatory gastritis. Withing the past 10 months, I also had problems swallowing, and physical reactions to proton pump inhibitors like aciphex and protonix. A recent EGD showed I had normal 24Hr pH test but had eosinophilic esophagitis which can be in conjuction with GERD. It may explain the symptoms that most seem to have with no improvement from meds. See this link about it:
