Bursitis Has Reoccurred After a Two Month Rest

Posted By Jamie (Killeen, Texas) on 07/11/2015

Hello, my name is Jamie and I'm 18 years old. This year around March time I was told by a doctor that I have bursitis in my left hip. After finishing track I took a two month break to rest my injury. Now college is around the corner and I am trying to get back in shape so I can participate in track for my school. The problem is that the pain from before is coming back. My hip is now hurting again, and my groin muscles feel extremely tight after a hard run. I've only been doing easy 2-3.5 mile runs every other day. And I was told to do a hard 1 mile run. After the run I decided to do some weight lifting but was unable to do because of my hip and a pulling feeling in my groin. After the workout it left me with intense pain in my hip, making it difficult to walk. Why is my bursitis coming back after taking the long break? Is this still bursitis or is it another possible issue?

Dear Jamie,

Did the bursitis begin after an injury? How was it diagnosed? (x-ray etc.)

You are very young to be having this much pain with a beloved activity. I would baby your hip as much as possible. Try Castor Oil Packs on the area. Try 1 teaspoon (or 4 capsules) of turmeric twice a day with a glass of water for pain and inflammation. Try Epsom Salt baths. And rest.

As a runner, you will have extra stress on your body. You will need to give it excellent nutrition (not easy to do in college, either, as I recall.) And plenty of hydration. Blackstrap Molasses, Gelatin, good protein and fruits and vegetables are all important. Use some good salt, too. I like Celtic Sea Salt. Keep junk food, fast food and soda at a minimum.

When I was your age I had a terrible jaw joint. I knew nothing to do for it (other than prescriptions) and it did get worse and worse and I ended up having surgery when I was 26. I couldn't imagine what my jaw would be like when I was middle aged! Now, I am middle aged. And my jaw and other joints are better now than they were 15 years ago. I had no idea how helpful good nutrition would be to my joints. I don't have a "perfect" diet, whatever that is, but I eat pretty well most of the time.

I hope you feel much better soon and are able to run track for your school!
