Dear Jd,

Marshmallow Root is wonderful for soothing the bladder.

I use the capsules and take 2-4 every 4 hours.

Also, avoiding acidic foods - especially things like orange juice, tomatoes, and spicy foods.

Is she still in the hospital? They usually have postpartum pads which are also ice packs that can reduce inflammation.

If you live locally to her, you can make what I have made for my daughter/daughters' in law - they call them "padsicles."

We make a strong comfrey tea and spray it on sanitary pads. Then place them in the freezer and use them for post partum bleeding. If comfrey tea is not an option, you can spray witch hazel on the pads instead.

If she is using a peri-bottle after using the bathroom, a drop of lavender essential oil can be added to the bottle and that really seems to help healing.

Once she is six weeks postpartum, she should look into a pelvic floor physical therapist. It can make a world of difference for women who have had any sort of trauma from birth.
