Awakened at night with nasal congestion

Does anyone know of a remedy for nighttime nasal congestion. Every night I am awakened with a stuffed up nose just on the side I am sleeping on causing me to turn over to the other side with the same results. I do have allergies, never have had a sinus infection and this basically only happens at night. I have tried everything known to man, the only thing that works is the OTC nasal decongestants that you can only use for three days. I have researched every natural nasal spray, decongestant/antihistamine pills made with no results. I have read that people with this affliction should sleep with their head elevated. I haven't found a position thats comfortable with my head elevated yet! I have been wondering if accupuncture would help to drain the sinuses. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi Diana, I would highly suggest acupuncture and Traditional Chinese medicine. I am sure it can help you. I had chronic problems with mucus for the longest time and this is what took care of it. What they will do is re- balance your body. It is a mucus condition and that could possibly be from poor digestion. TCM looks at the body in a very different way from western medicine so, it may have to do with a different organ rather than your sinuses. Nonetheless, your TCM Dr. will know by taking your pulses and checking your tongue.

You don't mention anything about your diet. What also worked for my daughter was eliminating all dairy. It worked for me as well. You will notice an immediate difference when you do this.

Hope this helps. Lisa

Hi, I sympathise with you on this as I suffered for years. My doctor prescribed flexinase which worked instantly. I took it for over 10 years until I realised I didn't need it ant more- I am asthmatic too and mine was related to dust allergies I believe and hay fever. In my latest house I don't have carpets which I think helped alot. But also it definitely helps cutting out milk as there is no mucose then. Now I believe that allergies like this could be due to a deficiency of vitamin a as well so you could look into this.

Diana: Check your indoor air quality, maybe consider better filtration or an added air purifier. In a worse case scenario you could have black mold in your home. Any homes that have been flooded require extensive cleansing to eradicate fungal toxins.

As a natural byproduct of modern living, you may be developing chemical sensitivities (along side the allergies). Remove all "scented" home or body products as they are very toxic. OxyFree® is a good fragrance free non-detergent laundry product.

Another little trick that might help is rubbing the nose with a generous amount of Cod Liver Oil/Vit-A. You will smell fish for a few hrs but this will greatly strengthen your nasal passages resistance to infection and inflammation. One treatment will last several days.

Hi Diana... I have asthma which is usually triggered at night and seems to worsen in the winter (indoor air). As others have mentioned getting rid of triggers can help... No rugs.. Air purifier, and good air circulation (ceiling fan)... I tend to be a mouth breather as well and found that rubbing Rosa Mosqueta oil (aka Rose Hip oil) on my nose and under my eyes before I go to bed seems to calm the nasal area and open up the passage... It isn't immediate but when I wake up later I find I am breathing through my nose.. Give a try, & if anything, it will be good for skin.
