Asthma and bronchitis after being exposed to silica dust

Posted By Natalie (Oak Lawn, Il, Usa) on 03/27/2010

I never had any breathing, asthma, or pulmonary issues of any kind before my exposure to dangerous silica dust at work. I work in an office and I was exposed to masonry brick grinding dust at work- the dust and debris came into my office and I breathed it in due to failure in protecting the ducts in the building. I felt immediately a burning sensation in my lungs, had no mucous, no tears for about a week. I had an awful taste in my mouth. After the exposures, I am not able to be around any chemical or fragrance. When I would walk into the office I would get a numb tongue and can taste the dust. I also get this taste if I am around a cleaning chemical or a perfume and never had these problems before. I will start to cough violently and immediately in reaction to anything that is related to this dust or any chemicals.

I now have asthma and lots of bouts with chronic bronchitis. I have a lot of mucous and a lot of coughing. I am on advair after being on asmanex and I am not getting any better. I do not have any problems with exercise and feel better after doing cardio daily. Is there something I can do to help myself heal? I am not near the dust and debris any longer and my work is cleaning up the environment but I need to help myself heal as I do not like taking perscription inhalers and albuterol daily. The coughing episodes are bad and I feel that they are getting more frequent. I cannot tolerate any fragrance, not even hand soap. Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Natalie:

I realize this is many months after your request, and I still don't see this in the list of Asthma remedies even though it's been out for at least 5 years, so perhaps you could try to find this product:

Ryegrass extract, brand name ORALMAT. Developed in Australia 1990's?

At the link, it'll tell you which large chain name store has it. Also available at their online website. Price was not mentioned. It's herbal, so it's not a prescription, and claims say it greatly reduces need for medication or eliminates the asthma altogether. Sounds in that respect a little like yamoa powder.
