Are there any alternatives to back surgeryPosted By Hameed (Dallas, Texas) on 12/06/2014
I am very worried as surgery has been suggested on Dece. 23, 2014 to remove bulge that is pushing into S1 nerve . I shall be highly obliged if you could suggest a specific cure for his case.

Sorry I cannot give you a specific cure, but stretches from the ceiling which I also have done for curvature of the spine, if possible. It takes years, but the benefits are from the start. Better than relying on an uncertain, irreversible intervention by the knife.
If you could find a good chiropractor, it may be the way to go. It may take some search. Considering the risk, it is well worth it. I know of a well known doctor, whose father was scheduled for such an operation which the doctor advised, his father, due to circumstances did not go that route but another lady did and she ended up in a wheelchair.

I will totally agree with Om. This surgery is not reversible, so one has to take a very intelligent decision. Just think of using Inversion Table, it helped me a lot and I avoided the spine surgery advised by the Orthopedic surgeon. So much so that I have come back playing golf. Google search for "Inversion Table" and you will get lot of information, get your own table and let your son use it two three times a day for short durations, I am sure he will get relief. He is too young to take a chance with the surgery.
Good Luck, Baldev

Suggest you research Prolozone and watch all Dr Shallenberger's videos concerning this topic. You are lucky that Texas allows this procedure. Most states don't .......it's too cheap and too effective.

On another note, my next door neighbor had a bulging disc that he chose to have surgery on. He was not athletic, had poor eating habits so, chose to listen to the doctors. One and one half years later, he is still disabled, addicted to pain killers and recurring adhesions at the internal healing site makes the pain intolerable. Really sad. He has become a recluse.
If the disc that is herniated is between L1 - L5 (lower back), I would suggest exploring every option before surgery. I do believe a multi-pronged approach is better then anything - with the emphasis on getting the disc back into place. When I saw my Sister's xray before and after - I couldn't believe she got the bulge back into it's original position. Find a certified pilates instructor who knows what they are doing and explain the situation. Your son has to be committed to the process though. The inversion table, a well trained chiropractor, whirlpool treatments, acupuncture, yoga (with a well trained instructor) will benefit. Please, don't use just any yoga or pilates instructor if this is the route your son will be taking. Explore one that is connected with a physical therapy organization and has other back injury patients. You don't want to make the problem worse. During the process, my sister went to an acupuncturist once a week to help with the nerve pain...healing will take time but is worth it.
Good Luck!

It's called the "pencil method."
You stand erect with your back straight and maybe even bent a notch backwards...Now bend you body forward with your hands on your thighs along the top of them...Go down to a very comfortable stretch which may be to the mid thigh give or take...Do 10 reps all the while keeping your back straight...Note the position and take a pencil and draw on your jeans or leg the position to where you stretched to...The next time do the same and increase the stretch with the width (maybe 1/4 inch) of the pencil for 10 reps...About the one week period increase the reps to 20...Stay at that level...You will be amazed when you get to your mid front of your calf and even feet...Along the way you'll feel the relief of the back pain...Please don't have an operation without trying this first...It's simple and works..

Re your sons ruptured disc:
If the disc material is truly pouring outthen the condition is more serious than merely bulging or herniated. If you have actually seen the MRI and know that the material has pushed out of its containment outer shell then this is a different issue than mere herniation.
Bulging disc can be dealt with by giving the pressure off of the disc. The vertebrae must be shifted and usually it is a pelvic issue where our Chiropractic care can help.
If the pelvis is shifted it will cause lumbar pressure on the vertebrae. Also an S curve in the vertebrae can cause such pelvic or vertebrate pressure which can in turn make the disc bulge at certain places in the vertebra.
However, if there is a true rupture in the internal material of the disc is actually flowing out of the disc itself through the outside wall of the disc then surgery may be necessary.
But I would make sure that the MRI truly shows this condition. Sometimes patients are told this is the case but in fact this is not really what is happening. And what is really happening is mere pressure of the disc making the disc pushed outward. No material is being released.
Take your son's MRI to a chiropractor to have the chiropractor examine the MRI to determine if the worst case is really present.
