50 and troubled with menopause and dry skin

Posted By Annieoakley (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) on 04/12/2012

Hi all, I'm 50yrs old and am going through Menopause, the hot flushes I can manage but the last 3wks my skin has got so so dry and flaky I'm at my wits end. I drink Aloe Vera as from yesterday and have started juicing again today my skin is just dull and wrinkles now showing.. Would oil pulling help? I bought some coconut oil today and shall start having 1 tablespoon a night. Has anyone got any suggestions as its driving me nuts... Thank you.

Annieoakley - also rub the coconut oil into your skin, hair, scalp etc. Don't use too much soap when you shower, unless you can get hold of a more natural type soap. We have both used coconut oil for years and it stays on your skin for a couple of days if you don't wash it off. It's quite beautiful but just make sure you get the Virgin, unrefined, organic coconut oil as it has a much better effect. I use it to oil pull as well so it wouldn't hurt to try. By the way, coconut oil is an excellent sunscreen, allowing you to go out in the sun and not burn.

Take a couple of tablespoons of flax oil. This has helped my dry skin tremendously. I can always tell when I have gotten out of the habit. It can also be helpful for other menopausal symptoms.

Greetings Annieoakley, You and I are both at mid life and are sharing the struggle with dry skin. Like you and Cat, I use coconut oil to moisturize every day as I step out of the shower. During particularly dry weather, I switch to a lotion that contains colloidal oatmeal. It's common in most every store here, so I hope you have no problem finding it. It's very thick and I take time to rub it on well, even into my nails and heels each time I shower and always after shaving my legs...

I'm not able to use coconut oil in my hair, as many women do. Oddly, it tends to make it feel brittle. Instead, I have decreased the number of days I shampoo and instead, rinse my hair with plain water in the shower and blow dry with cool air (or at a low temp if I need to look a little nicer that day). Doing this and just massaging my scalp and pulling the sebum through my hair with my fingers has helped me recover the health of my hair. I also drink several glasses of water per day and wear gloves to cook and clean. I hope you discover what works for you soon. Good-luck.

Annieoakley, try a dab of Progesterone cream 1x day and Evening Primrose Oil should help.
