Question by Sarah (Toronto, Canada)

Ted of Bangkok suggested crystals of menthol to stop cough. My pharmacist was alarmed, he says it is quite toxic and should not be taken internally.

Most cough syrup, Hall's Metholyptus candies, and many cough drops have menthol in it. And the amount a tiny specs is about the same amount they add in candies. The issue about cough drops is the sugar fuels the coughs and sugar should not be added. In event menthol crystals are used, you can always eat plenty of peppermint leaves, which they derive menthol from. Also eucalyptus and menthol drops was actually a folk medicine before the age of commercialism started using candies with menthol in it.
