Budwig Diet Protocol for Cancer

Modified on Aug 06, 2023 | Earth Clinic Team

If you are looking for a natural remedy for cancer that is easy to implement, inexpensive to execute and has a good track record, the Budwig Diet may be what you are looking for. Johanna Budwig was a German biochemist, pharmacist, and author with doctorate degrees in physics and chemistry. Her vast understanding of the sciences and health gave her the cornerstone on which to build her special diet for chronic diseases and cancers.

One of the beauties of her protocol is that is not a complicated protocol, yet it has proven to restore health to many. Johanna Budwig was an amazing woman who lived to be 95 years old.

Reduced to simplest terms, the Budwig Diet consists of flaxseed oil and cottage cheese, properly mixed, along side a healthy diet. Sunshine and relaxation are important aspects of the protocol as well.

It may seem preposterous that flaxseed oil and cottage cheese could be a recipe to restore health, but once some light is shed on the reason behind it, you may be willing to consider it.

As a physicist, Johanna Budwig understood the importance of electrical charge. As a biochemist, she understood the needs and complexity of cells. As a wise woman, she put it all together to come up with a solution to a significant health problem. She realized that the large amount of processed fats in the already poor modern diet were leaving cells without the electric charge necessary to work properly. Her specialized mixture of flaxseed oil with the sulfur rich protein in cheeses like cottage cheese, produces a fat that is water soluble and able to deliver the electrons to the cells, allowing them to function optimally.

Johanna Budwig used "quark," which is a soft cheese that is not aged. Quark is high in protein. Cottage cheese works well as a substitute as it has a similar amount of protein. For those who are dairy intolerant, a goat milk kefir that has been strained into a "cream cheese" can be used instead.

Budwig Diet Recipe

  • 2 tablespoons of organic low fat cottage cheese
  • 1 tablespoon flaxseed oil
  • Use an immersion blender on low to blend the mixture together until the oil no longer rises to the top.

After blending these two critical ingredients, you can add one or more of the following:

  • 1 tablespoon freshly ground flax seeds
  • fresh berries, organic preferred
  • organic nuts (except peanuts)

The mixture needs to be consumed right after fixing it. You cannot make the recipe ahead of time.

Flaxseed oil needs to be stored in the refrigerator. It can go rancid quickly.

Dosing for the Budwig Diet

For serious or terminal diseases, as much as 4-8 tablespoons of the oil consumed used daily, mixed with the cottage cheese. This can be spread out throughout the day.

For example, 2 tablespoons of the oil plus 4 tablespoons (1/4 cup) of the cottage cheese can be prepared thrice daily to get a total of 6 tablespoons of the flax seed oil daily.

A smaller person would likely need a lower amount and a larger person a higher amount.

As with most new remedies, it is best to start with less and increase the amount over the course of days or weeks to allow the body to adjust to the changes. This is especially true of those whose cancer or health challenge is in the digestive system.

You should expect to follow the protocol for many months. Likely a serious health problem developed over many years so it is reasonable to allow a course of time for the body to heal as well.

Additional Dietary Considerations

This diet is not likely to work if combined with a diet which consists mostly of processed foods, fast foods, and artificial sweeteners.

Johanna Budwig recommended a diet that was nearly vegetarian. Organic red meat and chicken can be used occasionally. Eggs should be organic and free range. Dairy products should be avoided except for the cottage cheese in the flax-cottage cheese mixture.

Foods to avoid:

  • Processed foods
  • Fast foods
  • Sugar
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • MSG
  • Soda

Foods that are recommended include:

  • Freshly juiced vegetables and fruits
  • Nuts
  • Raw honey
  • Green tea
  • Herbal tea
  • Whole grains
  • Coconut oil
  • Olive oil

You will find more complete dietary suggestions and recipes in her book.

Sunshine (Vitamin D)

Johanna Budwig believed that sunshine is important. As a scientist, she understood the amazing power and energy from the sun. People in our modern culture can easily move from apartment to car to office building each day, with almost no physical contact to sunshine.

Contrary to what is communicated in sunscreen commercials, sunshine is good for you. Look at the plants. Most plants require part or full sun to thrive. Plants convert sunshine energy to food. To think that human beings do not need real sunshine is to miss a free and delightful energy source.

Make some time to relax in the sunshine each day. Expose as much skin as decency and weather allow to sunshine. 10 minutes of sun a day before 11:00 am or after 3:00 pm is extremely beneficial. If you are not used to direct sun on your skin, start out with small amounts to allow your skin to adjust and avoid a sunburn.

Your body uses the sunshine absorbed through the skin to make vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for immune health. A vitamin D deficiency leaves you vulnerable to a multitude of health problems, including pain and weakness.

Exercise

Light exercise is a good compliment to most health promoting programs, if your health permits. However, strenuous exercise is not recommended if you are trying to heal from a serious disease. Exercise can cause the body to be depleted of some nutrients through sweat and it uses a lot of energy. During convalescence, your body needs that energy invested in your healing. Chi Gung, Rebounding, and daily walks are often recommended forms of exercise in integrative cancer treatment protocols.
