Hi buffena,
You might consider a two component homeopathic remedy that a friend of mine used successfully for his lumbar spinal stenosis. If you are interested, here is a link to his story and the remedy he used to very good effect :

It does not work overnight, but being a homeopathic remedy it is generally very well tolerated.
Another consideration that may offer some pain relief while waiting for the homeopathic remedy to start working is melatonin lotion which I describe how to make yourself at home here :

Also worth trying right away to try and relieve pain as soon as possible, is Stopain Roll On available at Walmart or Amazon. Here is a link describing it :
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Stopain-Extra-Strength-Roll-On-for-Muscle-Aches-Joint-Pain-and-Arthritis-3oz/10813848?classType=VARIANT
Stopain roll on has no reparative effects, just temporary pain relief. Science suggests that melatonin topical lotion may offer some pain relief and some potential reparative effects.
Please keep us posted on how your mom does!

If you can afford an inversion table, they have them on Amazon it might hold her until she's well enough to have surgery. Many people with disc degeneration and spinal stenosis use this and get immediate relief. Of course she's of advanced age and will need someone to assist her with it but it might provide immediate relief. Many YMCA's have them also if you just want to try it out first. I use mine everyday and feel wonderful after its use.
