Laryngeal spasms (also called vocal cord spasms or laryngospasms) are sudden, involuntary closures of the vocal cords that can make breathing or speaking difficult for a short period. Though brief, they can feel alarming. These spasms may be triggered by acid reflux, post-nasal drip, anxiety, or irritation from allergies or infections. Thankfully, there are several gentle and natural remedies that may help reduce their frequency and intensity.
1. Steam Inhalation
Moisture can soothe irritated airways and reduce the likelihood of spasms.
- How to Use: Inhale steam from a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head. Add a few drops of eucalyptus or chamomile essential oil if desired.
- Tip: A hot shower can serve the same purpose.
2. Magnesium
Magnesium supports muscle relaxation and nerve stability. Deficiency may contribute to spasmodic conditions.
