Cilantro for Grovers

Ron Charles (Indianapolis) on 07/27/2023
5 out of 5 stars

After reading comments on this site, and on the Mayo Clinic blog for Grover's I tried the Cilantro for my Grovers. My case extended down my arms and legs and was unbearable - causing sleep loss.

My dermatologist was skeptical and chuckled at Cilantro but it does work.

I bought a large high speed blender and do 5 bunches with frozen fruits Ginger & Honey, and then pour this into a plastic pitcher to last all week. I have noticed the itching goes away sometimes and I will reduce my intake and the itching then comes back - but as long as I get about 1 bunch in every 2 days the itching is at a minimum.

In reading about Grover's a good amount - there is some commonality where cause appears to be tied to - Drastic temperature change exposure (to & from Florida trips), exposure to deodorant skin pore clogging soaps, Mercury/Metals (fish etc), Mold, bacteria, or the Shingrix vaccine.

Some have found relief or cure from metal cleansing treatments - but there are cases of people contracting Grovers after metal cleansing treatment. Some have found cure with mold / bacteria treatments. Light sun exposure does seem to help but the ultra ray medical procedure doesn't seem to have much success and the steroid injections provide only temporary relief if any.

Cilantro is very good for the skin and has cleansing filtering properties which may help clear the Metals, Mold, Bacteria enough to temporarily stop the symptoms.

Cilantro for Grover's Disease

Cilantro seems to work!

I was first diagnosed with Darier's Disease in 2017, but I didn't think I had that as no one else in my family has this problem. It was a very small area at first. Every year it seemed to get larger. I moved to Florida and it started really spreading. Tried all those things everyone else has tried, steroid creams, Retin A as suggested by dermatologist. Never helped a whole lot. I finally went to another dermatologist here in Florida as it has been horrible! Did another biopsy and said it was Grover's Disease. That made much more sense to me. I can't do any exercise in Summer as it is just insane how miserable this disease is. The only relief I did find was washing myself with Hibiclens, which helped heal the itchy, red, spots on the trunk of my body - my back and front abdomen.

So once I received this diagnosis, I started searching and found this site. So I did try the smoothie cilantro recipe. I just used a bunch of organic cilantro, banana, and orange juice. After about 3 days, I started noticing it looked better and the itching started to subside. Now I was also sick from a cold, which caused this to rear its ugly head. Which Doc confirmed that can cause it to make an appearance. I am pretty sure that this cilantro made it disappear. I couldn't believe how it cleared up to where you can't tell I had it. Unbelievable, as usually if it does get better, I sometimes have lingering spots that take forever to clear... usually would be months. So I am a believer.

Thank you to whoever figured this out! Very grateful! I now drink a smoothie about 2x a week and I'm good. Not sure if I should only do this when it flares up, or maybe if I drink it every once in awhile, if it will keep it away. Definitely try it!

My grover's is 90 -95% gone since I started cilantro and cilantro-chlorella tinctures several times a day. Sauna followed by modified citrus pectin and activated charcoal (just a half to a whole teaspoon) helps keep the itch away.

Baby Shampoo, Calamine and Pramoxine Spray for Grover's Disease

Jennifer (Savannah GA) on 04/12/2023

I am 53 years old and had Grover's Disease for years on my rib cage that came and went. I thought it was a fungal infection. I treated it for 4 months with OTC antifungals and it only got worse. I tried A&D cream, washes for eczema, steroid creams. Anything I put on it made it angrier. It itched and burned so bad. I went to the Dermatologist who treated me for 2 weeks with oral antifungal medication-got worse. Then she treated me with antibiotics and topical antibiotic creams-got worse. So she did a biopsy (the sutures burned and itched unbearably but I could not remove them. Biopsy came back as Grover's disease.

I found that just washing the area with baby shampoo and leaving it alone helped the most. I had been doing fine and decided to go into a tannining bed. I got a little pink on my upper back. A few days later, I tried to go to bed and I began to itch unbearably on my back. I thought it was my sunburn healing because there were no bumps. I tried cortisone cream and took an antihistamine. It settled a little but I could not lay on my back or wear a shirt. The next day my back was covered in the notorious bumps. As a last hope, I bought a calamine and pramoxine spray. It burned at first but helped tremendously probably because it soaks up moisture in the skin.

Trying cilantro in my smoothies now.

Willow Balm, H2O2, Tanning Bed Helping Grover's Disease

TURBO 63 (PORT HURON) on 04/09/2023
5 out of 5 stars

I would like to be clear that my suggestions are just that and nothing more, I am not a doctor and I am not giving medical advise, simply sharing treatments that have worked for me..

I have not and will not take any oral medications, as I do not feel they work and have more than their share of negative side effects..

Treatments that work for me:

1. Willow balm for pain/ is still my go to for the itching and is amazing for stopping the itch.

(Cons) a bit strong smelling but I have smelled way worse..

(Note) Willow balm has product for itching but it is not as effective as the pain balm (it smells less strong).

2. Hydrogen peroxide to clean the affected area 2 to 3 times daily with triamcinolone 0.1% cream with willow balm 2 to 3 times daily.

(Cons) hydrogen peroxide can burn but it not the worst pain and use the peroxide after cleaning your skin..

3. Top choice for non-topical treatment is going to the tanning salon and using a uva /uvb stand up bed on the effected areas of my back and chest. I spend 4 to 6 mins 2 times a week and I am mostly itch free for 95% of the week.

(Cons) dermatologists get very unhappy about tanning. But since they have to personally deal with the non-stop itching day and night, I do not care what they think at this point. Tanning is the key to my dealing with gd. But keep in mind i am using a limited time to obtain a slight redding of my skin. Simply works for me.

I hope this helps as I have tried numerous products and this has been a blessing for me..

Since finding out about the Cilantro "cure" I tried it and it worked for me. I shared my findings with The Mayo Clinic Grover's Disease support group and almost half of them tried it and it worked for them as well. IT WORKS WELL for most sufferers.

I have been suffering from Grover’s and get no relief and basically no help from doctors. They say no cure and nothing seems to ease the itching.

Yesterday I went to a homeopathic doctor She made up a spray for me. I’m no longer itching in less than 24 hours. I’ll continue with it until my skin looks all clear. It’s like a miracle. Find a homeopath near you and go. Insurance does not cover but it’s well worth the miracle

Is Grover's Worsened by Certain Spices or Metal Containers?

Krissy (Rimrock AZ) on 12/15/2022

Trying to pin down what is causing more intense outbreaks: My Grovers really increased in the past couple of months. Strangely, I moved from WA to AZ and it hasn't been hot or anything but rather quite cold as of Dec 2. Last summer in WA was very hot and my Grovers didn't change much. I noticed when I went to Disneyland 2.5 weeks ago, I had ZERO issues and it actually cleared up! I was only there 3 days. (BTW, Cilantro is absolutely the best remedy, no doubt.) What I'm trying to do is figure out what I ingest at home that I didn't in CA. My best guess is pure seltzer in aluminum cans (heavy metals) and Cayenne.

My question is if anyone has zero'd in on an ingestible irritant...?

Grover's Disease - Easy Cilantro Consumption Method

Porty (New Zealand) on 09/27/2022
5 out of 5 stars

Grover's Disease: I've now been trying cilantro for around 10 days and I think I'm starting to feel a little less itchy, so I'll keep it going for a bit.

I found an easy way to down the cilantro without a smoothie that adds lots of carbs and sugar. In a Nutribullet I mash 15 – 20 grams of fresh cilantro with 12 cup of frig-cold water, then I drink it in about 5 – 6 gulps. But here's the trick – I keep my epiglottis closed while I do it, so I taste nothing. It's the same as pinching your nose, only easier. Anyone who's done a little snorkeling will know what I mean. Try it now: Breath through your open mouth but not through your nose. That's it, you've closed off your epiglottis.

When I finish drinking, I rinse the cup with a little tap water then rinse my mouth and spit it out. Then, with my epiglottis still closed, I rinse my mouth with a little Listerine or similar mouthwash. Then I start breathing through my nose again and there's no cilantro aftertaste. The last couple of days I've tossed some parsley into the brew. I might even try some kale. HTH :-)

Cilantro, Vitamin A+ Helping Grover's Disease Rash

Betsy (Georgia) on 08/29/2022
5 out of 5 stars

After reading all of these great posts on the Grover's Disease page, I tried the Cilantro smoothie once a day with usually a half of the bunch. Added turmeric and black pepper, (they have to work together) berries, a good collagen powder marine or bovine, along with a scoop of organic greek yogurt, ice, water and a scoop of organic non GMO plant based protein powder. I doubled my zinc to 30mg, 500 mg of curcumin (with black pepper), and 25,000-30,000 IU of Vit A plus what is in the cilantro, and 5000 of Vit C. Wore lose closing and limited bras. tried not to sweat during the day on my abdomen and lower back where my GD is located. I also added a uric acid cream twice daily. The one I used was Eucerin rough and bumpy cream. I saw and felt improvement after 2 days and great improvement after 5. Totally gone in 7 days. I am continuing the cilantro but will probably cut back to every other day in a couple of weeks. Staying with the uric acid cream daily and the supplements for a month at least. Then I will reduce the vitamin A, take a two week break from the zinc because it interferes with copper and reduce the dose, and reduce my Vit C. Amazing how food can heal! I cannot wait to return to the dermatologist to let her know so others can possible be helped. For history I have had this for about 6-7 years. Never knew what it was and treated it with a steroid cream that usually worked. It was self- limiting. This year at 62, it came on with a vengeance. My abdomen and lower back from bra line down was covered. It had never been that bad but I was spending way more time in the sun. I went to the derm, asked for a biopsy and it confirmed GD. Of course a strong steroid cream which I hated using because of the skin thinning effect ordered for 2 weeks on then off two weeks and back on for a total of 8 weeks. I tried that with absolutely no resolve and was not waiting 8 weeks to fix this. So I started researching and found this site amongst others. Thanks to all of you who posted. I take other supplements which may have had a small effect but these were the ones that I feel made a difference because I added them. I did try the butt paste etc but had no effect. May just have been me and very messy. Uric acid, I think was a big component because of the breakdown of the skin along with the other support of collagen, zinc, Vit A and C. Hope this helps someone else. Good Luck!

Cilantro, Vitamin A+ Clearing Grover's Disease Rash

Celeste (AL) on 06/06/2022
5 out of 5 stars

I am 60 year old woman who developed Grovers in March 2022. It started small, but it spread pretty fast and itched like mad. It was eventually all over my back, chest and belly. Went to walk in clinic twice, once with a fever. They didn't know what it was but prescribed prednisone, antibiotic, and antifungal the first time. It cleared up but came back 2 weeks later.

The second time they prescribed prednisone and corticosteroid creme and said go to a dermatologist. I did. He said it was Grovers. Did biopsy to confirm. While I waited on the biopsy result I used the corticosteroid creme on my back only for 5 days, once per day. It cleared it right up. I also found this site while I waited. I used cilantro smoothie daily for a couple of weeks which really helped with the itch.

But it is Vitamin A, 48000 IU per day that the dermatologist told me to take that is really clearing it up for good. The dose has to be taken down gradually to about 5000 IU per day after 3 months since Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin that the body stores. It is toxic if the mega doses were to be continued.

The dermatologist gave me a refill on the corticosteroid creme, but said not to use it on the breasts and belly because it thins the skin and can create problems because of it. This skin is already thin. Like others who have shared their despair about Grovers, I wonder if my Pfizer vaccinations and 2 boosters may have contributed to this problem showing up. Who knows.

I also was a rabid sunbather for several decades. It could just be my time given the damage I did. I hope this helps someone.

Oh, I am also taking 12 organic chlorella tablets and 2 activated charcoal tablets per day for detoxification. I'm keeping up with the cilantro smoothies a few times a week (1/2 bunch cilantro, 1/2 inch peeled ginger root, handful of spinach, frozen mango chunks, 1/4 avocado, 1 cup water).

God Bless You all.

Grover's Disease Triggers: Stress

James (NC) on 05/22/2022
5 out of 5 stars

My dermatologist says that stress plays a large part in Grover, and I believe this, as symptoms appeared at the time my Mother was diagnosed with breast and lung cancer. Being an only child, it was a stressor to the max, and after her passing (3 years later), the settling of her estate, which is still ongoing still is an awful burden.

Have been prescribed Triamcinolone Acetonide 1%, CeraVe cream, Doxepin, Zyrtec, and already take D3, chelated Zinc, Super Beets, Balance of Nature, and am a vegetarian (for over 40 years). Tried the cilantro drink for a week (awful, soapy). If anyone is trying the aforementioned treatments, they may be healthy, but not effective for my case. Already have a long list of meds, as was in a near-fatal car crash right before 9/11 & have had migraines since the age of 3.

My Grover is all over my trunk, legs, arms, neck & reaching to my face. only my hand and the soles of feet are clear. TY for listening, if you did. Hugs

High Dose Oral Vitamin A Cleared Up Grover's Disease Rash

Elena (California) on 04/30/2022
5 out of 5 stars

I started taking 50,000 IU daily for Grover's since this past Monday. As of today, my skin is almost cleared up!! Thank you to the contributors who shared that information! Just as a reminder take Vit D, 2000 IU more or less, because Vitamin A depletes Vit D.

I'm going to continue for another week, and then reassess whether I should continue on a decreased dosage of Vitamin A.

Best to All

Cilantro extract successful for Grover's disease

I was officially diagnosed with Grover's disease about a year ago after a decade of a relatively mild form. About a month ago we were leaving for Hawaii and my trunk and chest were covered in bright red spots. After Googling and finding my way to this site, I found the herb pharm extract at Whole Foods and brought it with me on vacation. Within a few days, things started to clear up. When I returned from vacation I stopped with the extract and the Grover's immediately returned. I restarted, use one dropper every day, and I am completely clear. I am usually somewhat averse to natural remedies (after growing up in a home hostile to medicine), but was desperate after my dermatologist could offer no other options (topical steroid didn't work). He (as well as I) am stunned by the results. I have no idea how well this will work for others, but it absolutely has worked miracles for me.

Anti-Fungal Remedies Cured Grover's Disease

Jeannette (Colorado Springs) on 03/17/2022
5 out of 5 stars

My Grover's disease turned out to be a fungus. I used "Fungal Forte" (from Original Medicine or Garden of Life...both same ingredients). 1 tablet 3 X's a day for first week; then 2 tablets a day for next week. I combined this with 2 activated charcoal (to eliminate die-off which is critical, otherwise it reactivates the rash). I like Bulletproof brand. I also used herbal organic talc baby powder to keep the rash clean and dry.

Nothing my dermatologist or PCP recommended worked. Helpful to reduce or eliminate stress, overheating that produces sweat. If you want to get rid of this insidious systemic condition faster, combine with anti-inflammatory foods (avoid bread/sugar). Stick as much as possible to protein, veggies, and low sugar fruit (Granny Smith apples, blueberries). Be careful of some fruits that often have mold (strawberries). In one week there was a miraculous difference and after two weeks I'm cured!
