What Are Bowel Disorders?

The digestive system is comprised of several different organs that function to break down food and move it through the body. The intestine is the part of the digestive tract that extends from the stomach to the anus and is made of two segments, the small intestine and the large intestine. With these organs playing such a large part in the function of the body, they are also susceptible to several different disorders.

While the most common bowel disorders affect the small intestine, the large intestine can also be affected by similar disorders. The most common bowel disorders include irritable bowel syndrome or IBS, Chron’s disease, celiac disease, and intestinal obstruction. While bowel disorders comprise a wide class of issues that present different causes and symptoms, the disorders also share some similar traits. Common bowel disorder issues and symptoms of IBS include diarrhea, constipation, a swollen and painful belly, gas, and vomiting. If symptoms of IBS or other conditions involve blood in the stool or vomit, fever, or sudden weight loss, immediate medical attention is necessary.

The cause of many bowel disorders is widely unknown; however, most conditions have some link to lifestyle factors including smoking, environmental factors such as diet, microbial and/or immunologic issues, and genetics.

Natural Treatments for Bowel Disorders

As many bowel disorders are caused by poor bowel and dietary habits, typically natural treatments are very effective for treating the symptoms of such disorders. A 30 day colon cleanse of just eating/drinking pure veggie and fruit juices is a good place to start treatment. Diluted apple cider vinegar, garlic supplements, baking powder and water, magnesium citrate, and vitamin c are also effective treatment methods. Every individual is different, so the objective for treating bowel disorders is trying different methods and finding an effective option.
