I never knew I had BV, until maybe 2 years ago, when my doctor called and told me my pap showed it. I got mines from sex. Even though I've only slept with one person, somehow we don't mix (this is what I call it). I noticed a scent (not quite fishy), but not pleasant. I also just didn't feel right down there, so for a few years, I would always drink cranberry juice mixed with vinegar after sex. This helped for the most part. I also would use bv gel applicators. These work too, but it's only a temporary fix. I soon started doing research and thought maybe I had BV (didn't know for sure until that dr visit) and treated it as such. When my doctor confirmed this, I got a prescription and it did go away, but soon that feeling returned and I did not want to be on a continuous cycle of antibiotics. After researching more, I started taking acidophilus. I only buy the ones with over 1 Billion active cultures. I now take these tablets at least once a day. I also double up on them after too much sex. I'm usually fine unless I slip up and stop for a few days. This has been a savior and I will continue to take them. I no longer have to keep cranberry juice and vinegar around which would take way longer to clear symptoms (acidophilus only takes about a day or 2). Hope this helps someone.

BV: I douche with acidophilus. I took 5 capsules and poured into douche and I have been doing it for 2 days and omg what results!! I try inserting it directly into vagina but it never worked but the douching with it worked like a charm. I googled and there is a study in it!! Just google douche acidophilus bv and it will pop up. the study did it for 6 days so I'm gonna do it the next 4 days. this is the ONLY thing that has worked for me. I'VE tried tea oil, vit insert vaginally, acv, and 2 prescription meds....nothing worked but this. I feel great!!! I also continue to take vit e, c, 400 of folic acid, multi vit, zinc and magnesium calcium (all in one pill), and 1 acidophilus pill orally. I don't know if I have to continue with the vit but I've been doing it for a while.

Yes, you are giving it back to each other. Have him take the Acidophilus as well. I have experienced this issue also.

I have used acidophilus tablets after clearing BV infection with 7 days of hydrogen peroxide douches. Used acidophilus every other day for 2 weeks by crushing it and putting it as far in vagina as I could. Now just doing twice weekly. No symptoms since I started it.

bo, I was struggling too!! But I fixed it overnight. Its awesome.. and yes douche with half and half of hydrogen peroxide 3% and half water.. slowly put it in. And I just used an old shampoo bottle (cleaned first of course). And once its in try to hold it n for 30 seconds like your holding in your pee.. then release. Do this until the mixture is on. I did this in my tub BTW. And yes its gross but you may see little white stuff come out of you that smells foul.. this is good!! Then after your done with that rinse out a couple times fast to lush out the dead yeast. Then insert 1 acidolpus pill into your vagina!! Its that simple!! Its awesome please try it!

I have done so many re-searches I almost gave up, my Dr. kept telling me I had a yeast infection, another Dr.told me different etc. I was constantly and continuously given anitbiotics until for some reason they stopped working and/or it reversed the cause, I came very close to having a heart attack because of over use of antibiotics. I have recently found I have a fungal virus, I have been treating my problem with pro-biotics then moved onto Siggi's 100% acidophilus and inserted it into my vagina with a small syringe (with-out needle) I feel great already. One of my younger sisters died from brain cancer/mold, my older brother (Toxins) mold died & two of my nephews died from cancer/mold, my aunt in her mid-eighties turned black like charcoal/mold. She too died. My older brother died in his fifties from a heart attack/mold. This is what doctors will not tell us.

Acidophilus for BV: Hello all... I have suffered from bv since I was very young. I believe I had it from the first time I had my period. (Now in my mid 30's) I did not know that I had it until a few years ago but I had tried discussing the odor with doctors and they would just say they did not notice it and I was probably self conscious about it. I finally read about it online and then had to insist on getting tested and of course I had it. The meds do not work for me and it just comes right back often within days. I have tried all kinds of cures from vitamins, diets, pro-biotics, folic acid, yogurt, inserting yogurt, soaking in peroxide, etc etc. I did not try douching though because I am afraid it would make it worse. I pretty much just learned to live with it and showered multiple times per day to get rid of the odor or wore pads if that wasn't possible. Recently, the symptoms had started getting worse with not only the odor but itching and burning. I went to our local health food store and began telling a lady who my family knows there about it and she suggested pro-biotics. I told her I had already tried a few different kinds and she encouraged me not to give up on them because they all have different strains and dosages. I asked her which she would recommend and she gave me a couple. One was a probiotic formula for women which I decided to go ahead and try it (sort of reluctantly because I already spend too much money on trying to solve this). I could tell a difference in the itching and burning within a couple days and the odor has consistantly gotten better. I have been on them for about a month now and I cannot believe the difference. It was kind of amazing to me because I have tried alot of probiotics and not cheap ones either! I wanted to pass this on for all of you who have suffered with this and hopefully it can help some of you too :)

Hey guys I just want to say what worked for me was taking lactobacillus. I took one in the morning and one at night and when I woke up in the morning it was cleared up. Each pill contains 10 billion good bacteria which will kill the harmful bacteria that causes the smell and discharge. I also soaked in a apple cider vinegar bath for about 30 min. I'm going to continue to take the pills and then make an appointment with the doctor to make sure this is gone for good!!

My doctor told me to open a acidophilus capsule, mix it with water to make a bit of a paste, and insert it. I have to do this after sex because that's when I get issues. So far it has worked wonders. I've been doing it for about a month or so and have no adverse effects. Only problem is that the powder in the capsule DOESN'T mix with water so I mix it the best I can, and use a small plastic tongue depresser type thing and insert it that way.

I finally stopped being so stubborn about my previous doctor's visit, and found a different doctor to go see. She was was really nice, and actually did a pelvic examination, which the previous doctor did not even do and let myself diagnose myself with a yeast infection. Turns out it is definitely bacterial, and I am now taking metronidazole (Flagyl), I am on day 7 and it seems to have cleared up. Ladies, I wish the natural cures worked for me but they didn't. I tried EVERYTHING but boric acid. I'd say try the natural cures but don't let it go on for months and months! If you're tearing your hair out and crying over this go see a doctor. Not all doctor's are evil and uncaring. AT LEAST get a proper diagnosis from a pelvic exam, you don't have to take what they prescribe you but you can at least know what you're actually dealing with.

I'm definitely going to continue with the folic acid and probiotics as well to maintain and prevent this from happening again. But I think my infection was just too far gone for them to help on their own at this point. I may also consider using vagicare inserts (ascorbic acid) or hydrogen peroxide after my period to keep the pH level down so that I never risk getting this again.

About a year ago I noticed a strange odor and went to my gyno to check out what the problem was, once I was there they tested me and told me I had bv. I was prescribed the metronidazole pills and within days the smell had disappeared and I assumed the bv was gone, I was wrong. About 2 or 3 months later it reappeared and next I was prescribed the metronidazole gel which once again rid me of the problem months later it came back and it started to become reoccuring! The smell was not as prominent, but it was still there and being a woman this is a very uncomfortable problem! Every time It would come back I would get another prescription of the gel and it would come back!

The last time it came back I called and spoke to a nurse and the gyno and she told told me she heard woman who took acidophilus and said it seemed to help with the problem also upon research I read that taking 800 mg of folic acid along with the acidophilus greatly improves your chances! She reading the great reviews I gave it a try and 8 months later I am happy to say I have not been visited with bv! For any woman out there I know it is tough to deal with this, but take it from me this combination of medicine really helps and it also has good side effects that help with not only bv, but other things throughout your body! I really hope this helps!

Thank you ladies and Earth Clinic. I'm 40, and had my first symptoms of BV 2 1/2 months ago after a round of antibiotic and a new partner. I have had NO SYMPTOMS at all since I combined a multivitamin that is FORMULATED for women (400 mcg of Folic Acid) and 50 Billion acidophilus. The KEY is not to get regular, or even refrigerated acidophilus because your body will digest it in the stomach and very little gets to the place it needs to repopulate the flora. I tried regular stuff at first and it helped but did not cure. Buy the delayed release acidophilus which sold at health stores for vaginal health. This acidophilus gets digested in the intestines and WILL repopulate the good flora. Thanks to all that posted, and good luck to everyone. No one should have to have this problem ongoing.

Wow so grateful to have this site and thanks to all of the wonderful contributors. I am 40 and just got my first experience with BV about a month ago. Thought it was a yeast infection but the symptoms weren't right and treating for that only gave me a bladder infection. I tried the Hydrogen Peroxide on a tampon with NO improvement whatsoever, so decided to try this. I took 800 mcg of Folic Acid morning and night for the first 3 days and a FloraJen (20 million) (on an empty stomach) and then I only took one 800 mcg Folic Acid and one FloraJen per day after that. I got my girlie days after I started, so I don't know exactly how long it took, however after one week at the maximum, I have NO MORE SYMPTOMS at all. Yay!! Thanks everyone, hope you all find yourselves happy and healthy.

After years of frustating BV infections using flagyl only to reoccur. I'm finally symptom free and I must share: I started a daily regime of taking acidophilus and vitamin E daily. For 7 days I douched with 1/4 hydrogen peroxide and 1/4 water, after douching treatment for 3 days inserted 2 acidophilus pills in the vagina. I still smelled a slight odor. So I douched for 2 days with hydrogen peroxide/water. Try it what do you have to lose and this treatment is not expensive.

I'm so happy I found this website. About a month ago I started taking 2 pills of folic acid and 2 acidophilus (orally) before or during lunch and dinner every day and within 3 days everything was gone! Using peroxide vaginally did work for me... But only for 24hrs... And doing that everyday didnt seem safe. Plus: these vitamins are way cheaper than OTC remedies (pushing $15-30 a month for temporary healing). A bottle of each costed $11 supplying 2 months. Also, these vitamins are good for your overall health while the temporary OTC vaginal specific medications only help the infection. So for everyone suffering like I was: just give it a shot! It works against the infection and for your overall health

I would first like to thank all the ladies on this thread for contributing their advice on attaining a cure for BV. My daughter had recently started a regime of birth control about 1 year ago (the shot) however she started to experience heavy bleeding. She was then given a different type of shot (to counteract the bleeding) and eventually stopped bleeding. Then about 2weeks after the new shot she started to get a putrid odor from inside and a discharge on her underwear. The odor was a "fish" like smell and the discharge color looked like a light brown discharge. This was such a horrible experience for her because my daughter has always practiced good hygiene and never had any type of odor issue in her life ever. Their was no change in her diet or anything out of the ordinary that occurred in her life beside receiving the new birth control shot. In an attempt to solve this issue I decided to do a Google search and came across this site. After reading ALL of the post I felt empowered to attack this issue with home remedies in hand.

I went to the local whole foods store purchased:

1. Reuteri/Primadophilus by Nature's Way- Multi strain 5billion CFU (stored in refrigerator section/ask attendant)

2. Kefir Yogurt

Then went to CVS local pharmacy and purchased:

1. 1 Box of Disposable MEDICATED DUCHE

2. 1 bottle of Folic Acid

3. 1 box of BV treatment - this cost around $30. 00 it contains 6inserts and 6 disposable applicators. (In the feminine care aisle)

Regime:

Day one-

1)2pills (reuteri) taken with the kefir yogurt.

2) Douche with medicated douche

3) Apply first BV insert into vagina

4) Take 1 Folic acid pill and drink lots of water and cranberry juice.

Day two - six

Same regime as above EXCLUDING Douche

Day six and onwards

Same regime as above EXCLUDING BV inserts (the BV insert treatment contains only 6 dosages)

I was so happy when my daughter called me with excitement in her voice and said that she was FREE!!!!! Meaning feeling released from the bondage of B.V. She urged me to come back to this site as soon as possible and Thank all of You lovely ladies that came together and shared your information. I told her I already did :-)

THIS STUFF WORKS FOR REAL!!! I wish you all great success in getting cured.

GOD BLESS

I used chewable acidophilus which seemed like it easily disolved when inserted vaginally (which I only did once anyway). I also used a peroxide and H2O douche (only the first day) and took folic acid as well as the acidophilus daily as directed. All symptoms are completely gone within the first two days. After researching on the internet, I think mine was caused by my IUD (Mirena) and a new monogomous partner after my divorce. I have had symptoms for a year and didn't know what it was. I had read on webMd.com that acidopholis had been used as home remedy for decades but that it was found in dairy and not naturally in the vagina so it wouldn't work. So I just want everyone to know that reads this that it does in fact work (at least it or the folic acid). No more putrid odor. I am so thankful!

Hi,
I hope this info helps the rest of you ladies because I am soooooo excited to finally receive some relief from this nightmare. I've suffered with BV for the past two years. Got prescriptions, creams, acidophilous pills, you name it. It would go away just to come back within a month or so... Got laid off so buying all of these products and even buying yogurt is pricey..... So I ordered some kefir grains from a wonderful lady and cultured them in milk overnight on my kitchen counter. So far I've drank kefir for only TWO days and the odor is nearly gone. I didn't measure any out, just poured in a glass in the morning and evening, the taste isn't the best.. Just like having plain yogurt. Order grains online.

I have been a chronic bv sufferer for about two years. Everytime I was antibiotics, I would feel like myself but as soon as my period returned so did the bv. It seems like every month for about two years I had bv. It almost ruined my relationship. I FINALLY decided to STOP listen to the doctor and I did extensive research online to come up with a home remedy that would work for me. I have been doing the hyroden peroxide/ water douche for about two weeks now. It works wonders!!!! I also soak a tampon with tea tree oil/ vitamin E everyday for a week and then once a week. I also take fem dophilius 2 in the morning and 2 at night. 1600 mg of folic acid, 2000 mg of vitamin C.

I would encourage anyone who is suffering to read and do extensive research. I am so thankful for final getting this problem under control. I am so grateful to all the ladies who shared their secret cure. Hopefully this helps!

Warning

I participated in douching with half peroxide half water, took folic acid, and inserted refrigerated acidophilus/probiotics from many testimonies I read here. That was roughly 2 years ago. I definitely received some immediate relief. I started having mild urinary issues a few months later and from there my health has plummeted. I have read some scary things about refrigerated acidophilus eventually expiring and turning into mold spores. I'm not sure how accurate this is but I sure wish I had even the slightest bit of that knowledge to eliminate that as a possibility regarding my current health concerns. I now have a systemic candida infection which is causing me severe pain! I don't have all the answers nor am I able to conclude that this was the cause... But if anyone has any clues or any suggestions feel free to do so. Please be warned that this a possibility and taking probiotics should probably remain an oral supplement...

I did this treatment for only two days. First say with a tampon, 2nd day with an applicator. It was instant relief. Today is day three and it has not come back yet. The Yogurt I used was Plain Organic yorgurt and one of the cultures it contains is the L. Acidophilous referred to over and over again on this site. What helped me get much less severe BV was when I read on Web-MD that it may be caused with the anti-bacterial soaps. I discontinued using Anti-bacterial shower gel. Now I am avoiding shower gels altogether and will only use Ivory bar soap. It's the last soap I recall using prior to getting this horrible infection over and over again. I am sooo thankful I found this site. I had been taking the metro gel and pills over and over again but it kept coming back. I hope this will help others too. Good Luck!

I just want to say that this forum has saved my life. I've suffered from BV for at least 5 years without truly understanding what was wrong with me. At first, I thought it was a really bad yeast infection. OTC medicine didn't work. I was too embarrassed to go to the doctor, too embarrassed to talk about it and boy; was sex a chore! The prepping it took to "feel" clean took all of the enjoyment out of the act. Would my boyfriend smell anything? Was I clean enough? I would quickly hop out of bed and run to the shower. No cuddling for me. The odor was putrid and the discharge amazingly heavy. I hopped online and found my diagnosis... now, what to do? After more searching, I came across this site. I burst into tears when I read all of the testimonies and feedback. I couldn't believe that there was a glimmer of hope for me. I immediately ran out and picked up peroxide, acidophilus (1 billion) and some distilled water. First, I douched with a quart of distilled water mixed with 3 tablespoons of peroxide (3%). Then, I took 2 pills orally and one vaginally. Put on a panty liner and waited for discharge and odor. The next morning when I awoke, there was nothing! When I say nothing, I mean nothing. I was in shock! Absolutely amazed. I understand that douching isn't really good for you and will only do it maybe once every 3 weeks. I've taken two pills orally and one vaginally for the past three days and the only side effect I've had is a little spotting. I think I will cut back to one orally, once a day and one vaginally.

I just want to say that this forum is a Godsend and I am SO appreciative of all of the great feedback. Thank you ladies!!

I had never even heard of bv until about 2 months ago, when I developed this terrible itch & putrid odor. I had no idea what it was until I looked it up on the internet. After discovering bv, I went to earthclinic (i've used this site for a couple of other ailments & had good experiences with the remedies). After reading all the entries, I went to a health store & purchased a bottle of acidophilus. I took 2 as soon as I got home. I also bought plain yogurt with live cultures, stuck a tampon in it wore it for about 3 hours. The odor was almost gone that night & completely gone the next morning. I now take one acidophilus every evening & have had no reoccurences. I also dry myself with a blowdryer as soon as I get out of the shower. I did read up on bv & found that you can develop it from sweating alot, eating too much sugar & white flour. I think that's what triggered mine. We had 2 blizzards in a row & I spent hours outside shoveling snow, wearing ski pants & a sweatshirt. I was sweating quite a bit. In our house, a blizzard means lots of junk food, which we had & which I unfortunately ate too much of. I now eat very few foods that contain sugar or white flour. Any time I'm tempted, I remember the odor & unbearable itching, & I'm able to resist. On the upside, I've also lost 6 lbs. I was lucky - this was my first (& hopefully last) experience with bv & it only lasted about a week before I thought to research it & turn to earthclinic for help. And what I tried worked immediately. I hope this helps someone else.

Re: Bacterial Vaginosis

I've been reading a lot on this site about Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. Acidophilus) and its success in treating bacterial vaginosis (BV). For those who are having trouble getting it to work, here's some info that might help. There was a clinical study performed using four different strains of lactobacilli. L. acidophilus, apparently, may be helpful, but is not necessarily the best one to use. They found that L. rheuteri and L. rhamnosus are the most effective. BV can be caused by an imbalance in the pH which leads to a decrease in lactobacilli (good stuff) and/or an increase in Gardnerella (bad stuff). Antibiotics don't work well against Gardnerella because it exists in a biofilm - a community of organisms (bacteria in this case)that encapsulate themselves protecting them from the antibiotics. So the antibiotics never really get rid of the Gardnerella or restore lactobacilli and your BV returns. Gardnerella, lactobacilli, and pH are linked, so if your pH goes up for whatever reason, lactobacilli go down and let the Gardnerella take over OR the Gardnerella colonize and kill off the lactobacilli. Chicken or the egg. Anyway, of the four lactobacilli tested, L. rheuteri reduced the biofilms most effectively and the L. rhamnosus displaced the biofilms most effectively. So basically, one kills and the other crowds out. So if you're having success with L. acidophilus, great! - it's good for you regardless. If not, or you want to try something different...find a probiotic that contains significant numbers of L. rheuteri and L. rhamnosus. There's at least one particular brand that has this, carried at health food stores, in the refrigerated section. It's in a brown, glass bottle to protect it from heat and light.

For myself, I use 2 capsules of this probiotic orally in the morning w/ Vit. B12 400mg and Folic Acid 800mcg. Then at night I take Vit. B12 400mg and Folic Acid 400mcg orally and 1 probiotic capsule vaginally. Wetting the capsule first seems to help give it a kickstart dissolving. I also drink one low-sugar probiotic drink a day, found in the yogurt section of the store and take Vit. C and a multivitamin daily. This has really seemed to help. I do the hydrogen peroxide flush right after my period. Hopefully, this helps someone else. Also FYI I'm an RN and have suffered from BV aka "the life ruiner" since my teens and am just now finally getting it under control. Cheers and good luck!

I felt better but it's not cured. I started on Folic Acid and L. Acidophilus on Wednesday night. I felt better on Thursday but started to felt itching on Friday. Here is the list of what I took..

Wednesday - 1 Folic Acid (800 mcg) and 2 L. Acidophilus (5 billon live cell) capsules at night.

Thursday - 1 Folic Acid in the morning and 1 multi-vitamin tablet. Since the multi-vitamin I took during the day contains Folic Acid 400 mcg, I skipped the Folic Acid at night and took 2 L. Acidophilus before bed.

Friday - In the morning, I took a multi-vitamin contains Folic Acid 1200 mcg but no L. Acidophilus.

I only took L. Acidophilus before bed since few women post that they have to lower or stop the L. Acidophilus to feel better. I truly believe L. Acidophilus is good for us but I also want to be careful since everyone responds differently. Maybe I didn't take enough.. On Friday, my condition got worst then Thursday.

So I went to the local natural food store and picked up some organic fresh garlic, a bottle of garlic supplement (6,248 mcg allicin - 90 tablets), tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide and a bottle of cranberry juice (fresh pressed, not from concentrate and no sugar added).

I never douched before and I don't know what I need to get so I decided not to try that yet. I decided to start on use a garlic in my v first.

Friday - At night, I took 1 garlic supplement and 2 L. Acidophilus. I also used organic non fat plain yogurt mixed with some L. Acidophilus (open 1 capsule and use the powder inside only) on the lips of my v. I left the yogurt mix on the lips for 30 min then washed off and dried it well with blow dryer. I was hoping to get some release from the itching on the lips. The yogurt was cold so it did calm the itchiness. It did seems to work (I can't really say it worked but I feel fine after). I decided to try the garlic method, put a fresh garlic in the v. I pilled the garlic and cut the end off. I also pressed few marks with my nail so the juice of garlic can come out a small tiny bit. I tied a string on the garlic by using needle passed the string from one end to the other then tie a knot at the end. Make sure the knot is not too small and it will lock on the garlic and help you pull it out from your v. I also make sure everything is clean! my hands, string, needle, everything I need to use.

Saturday - I felt much better! I do see some white discharge and I think what I have is yeast. (I get yeast and bv both usually) I took the garlic out after I woke up.

A hour later, I cleaned my v with hydrogen mix with water. Just to washed the outside, not douche. Before the wash, I tried to clean up some discharge inside my v a bit. Make sure my finger is clean and dry, try to scoop some white discharge out (no nail and be gentle and careful not to hurt yourself). After washed, dried it well and got another garlic. This time I cut it half and before I put it in. This happened 2 hours ago and I am really feeling much better!

I am a firm believer in the Acidophilus. I have only had BV once in my life and it was about a year ago. Well this year, I have had it 3 times and do not know why! I am very clean, shower every day and have had limited partners (and used condoms). You clear up the BV and then you get a yeast infection because the PH levels are so screwed up. Or you take Metrogel and get a yeast infection because of it being an antibiotic and then get BV again from all the activity in the vaj jay :).

Anyway, my doctor asked me if I had ever heard of Acidophilus. I said Huh ? She told me to take it for 14 days and i felt great while taking it. But as soon as I quit taking it, I felt like it came back. She tested me and said it did not come back, but about a month later I had such an odor from between my legs I could not stand it. So i went back to the dr and got checked, confirmed I had BV again and got some more Metrogel.

I was told that the thick, cottage cheesy discharge from the Metrogel is the bad bacteria coming out of your body.

I started taking the Acidophilus again and have decided to take it regularly to help with keeping it from coming back!

I have taken it for over a month now and felt great. But I bought a different kind and it only has 100 million bacteria in it, and I feel kinda weird now. So I wondered if I need to try the 2 pills/day and one at night in the vaj jay ? Maybe the dose is too little ?

Anyway thank you for all your comments and suggestions, it definitely helps and makes ya feel better that you are not alone!
