Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare cancer that most often develops in the salivary glands of the head and neck, although it can arise in other glandular tissues throughout the body.
ACC is unusual because it often grows relatively slowly but can behave persistently over many years. It has a particular tendency to grow along nerves, recur after initial treatment, and sometimes spread to distant organs long after the original cancer was diagnosed.
For localized adenoid cystic carcinoma, treatment commonly involves surgery followed by radiation therapy. Recurrent or metastatic ACC can be more difficult to treat, and clinical trials are playing an increasingly important role in developing better therapies.
