Oily Skin Remedies

If you struggle with oily skin, first know that you are not alone, and second, realize that there is an answer. You have likely tried a myriad of different skin care products to treat your overly oily skin and become frustrated or even accepted that oily skin is just a way of life for you. Well, we are here to let you in on a little secret (or a very big one) – you can cure oily skin issues! The first step toward treatment is understanding the problem, beginning an effective skin cleansing regimen, and using the right natural products including peppermint, lavender essential oil, buttermilk, clay, and lemon juice.

What Causes Oily Skin?

While many people attribute skin issues to one singular issue, the reality is that a variety of different factors work together to create the environment of the skin. As such, it is likely not one singular issue causing your oily skin woes. There are at least nine common causes of excess oil in the skin. Genetics, overuse of skin care products, seasonal changes, medication, use of incorrect products, hormonal changes, stress, unnecessary use of skin care tools, and sun tanning can all lead to excess oil in and on the skin.

What Does a Healthy Skin Regimen Include?

While there is no single “best” skincare regimen for everyone, most skin treatment plans are founded on the same fundamental principles. Most skin cleansing programs involve the use of regular washing, using a toner, moisturizing the face (yes, even for oily skin), and applying regular masks to deep clean and exfoliate the facial skin. You may have to play around with a few different “product” options and even treatment arrangements to decide what is best for your skin.

What Are the Best Natural Remedies for Oily Skin?

While your skin will likely react differently to different products that your best friend’s skin or even your sister’s skin, there are a variety of products that are known treatments for oily skin. Among the most effective options are peppermint, lavender essential oil, buttermilk, clay, and lemon juice.

1. Peppermint

Peppermint is a wonderful addition to a homemade toner. This essential oil has astringent properties that help cut the look and feel of oil on the skin. Crush a tablespoon of peppermint in a cup and cover it with a cup of boiling water. Once cooled, strain it and use the water as a daily toner.

2. Lavender

Lavender is an effective yet gentle skin cleanser and toner. You can use lavender floral water as a regular spritz throughout the day to freshen your face and prevent overproduction of oil.

3. Buttermilk

Buttermilk tones and moisturizes the face. Massage your face with buttermilk several times a week after you have washed it, and the acids in the milk will clean away dirt and tighten your pores.

4. Clay

Clay is a great product to use as a mask. It helps reduce daily greasiness by pulling the impurities out of the skin. Bentonite is the best type of clay to use for this type of treatment.

5. Lemon Juice

Lemon juice can also be used as a grease-fighting mask. Use it alone or in combination with other treatments like honey, and you’ll have fresh, clear, oil-free skin in no time.
