Questions About 5HTP for Severe OCD, Anxiety, Tics and Depression

Posted By Anne (England Uk) on 05/18/2016

I was on fluoxetine for 25 years, increasing over the years due to lack of efficacy. For the last five years I was on 80 mg. I ended up with tinnitus, and highly sensitive hearing to the point where everything hurts my ears; and believe it was the SSRI. I read a harvard article on the link between seretonin and tinnitus you see. On trying a different SSRI, the tinnitus doubled.

I came off it a year ago and have been through the worst hell imaginable. I want to try 5HTP but concerned about the seretonin... your article gives the idea that it balances it rather than gives extra. I also had insomnia, inability to orgasm and inability to cry while on 'prozac'... will those be a problem if I take 5HTP?

I appreciate your feedback, if you get chance. I'm desperate, and hope you can help. I have no life and Im housebound with the ocd/tics being so bad. I'm a fortysix year old woman, not on any medication at all with a good medical history. Please reply, if you can. Thank you

Anne: Start out with a low dose of 5HTP, like 25 mg and you should only experience positive effects.

Other natural meds you should consider is Magnesium (many ways to increase or intake Mag like oral caps or tabs, topical spray or rub, and footbaths or whole body baths of Epsom Salts), and a Homeopathic formula like Hylands "Calms Forte'" or Dr Barbara Hendel's "Homeopathic Calm".

There are also a number of healing music or harmonic tones that are designed specifically to manipulate brain frequency to relaxing levels. You can find a number of these on YouTube. Type in "Isochronic Relaxing" or Tranquility Binaural", any combination of those words will get you some really good healing music. I highly recommend this. You will need headphones and lay down on your bed, and get very relaxed.

Another natural relaxing nutrient is GABA. Start with 500mg per day then later increase to 1grm per day.

The herb St John'sWort is a very good mood up-regulator which is best used through the long, dark, and cold wintertime.

Hello Anne! Go to YouTube and listen to Dr. Andrew Saul - interviewed by Dr. Mercola on Niacin Therapy. The research done by Dr. Abrahm Hoffer is really amazing as it relates to mental health issues and niacin.

All the best!
