5-htp W/ Depression, Celiac, Child?

Posted By Batwing (South Hill, Virginia) on 03/19/2012

Hello..... LOVE this site!!! I have a daughter who has celiac disease and clinical depression which is really NOT being helped much by RX meds. Also, her daughter is 14 and diagnosed as bipolar and ADHD, also NOT being helped by the meds given her. I've read conflicting statements about giving 5-HTP to people with celiac disease and also to children, altho my granddaughter is at an adult weight and size. They need help!!! Would the 50mg be safe to try??? Thanks for any help/advice!

I take 5-HTP and it has helped me tremendously. I don't have Bi-polar but I do have occasional depression. I do not take any perscriptions as I believe they do more harm than good. I also give the 5-HTP to my 16 year old daughter who tends towards depression and quite possibly bipolar disorder. She is so much happier when she takes it that I will keep giving it to her until she chooses to do otherwise. She is also not on any perscriptions. I also make sure she takes a multi vitamin, D3, Vit C, Lithium oratate 5mg, magnesium, and GABA. These are all very important minerals and vitamins for the brain. Which is where depression and bipolar occur. There is a really good product for depression called Theanine Serene. It works wonders. I take this product which contains GABA, L-theanine, Taurine, Relora, Holy Basil, magnesium. I also take the 5-HTP. Best wishes to you and your daughter and grand daughter.

My daughter, adopted from Russia, was just prescribed 5HTP from her doctor due to the results of a urine test showing she is low on serotonin. She has Fetal Alcohol Effects. Can anyone recommend a brand they have tried with their children that they like??? By the way, she also was diagnosed with Celiac's and the doctor did recommend her taking 5HTP.
