Will It Harm Turmeric to Cook It?

Will cooking turmeric, black pepper and ACV with meat reduce or remove their health benefits? This is being done in Asian restaurants and I want to try a recipe at home to make my kids take this cold remedies without forcing them.

Dear Andrei,

A general rule for making herbal tea is to boil the roots and not to boil or overheat the leaves and flowers. So, since turmeric is a root, I think cooking should be okay.

I am not sure of the effect of cooking on pepper.

Unfortunately, cooking raw apple cider vinegar is like pastuerizing it and would likely kill off some of the benefit.

Perhaps it would be possible to add vinegar and spices after cooking the food?

I can usually disguise vinegar in juice for my children. Even a teaspoon in a cup of juice is helpful. Less for a very little one.

I recently read the ingredient in black pepper, piperine, is destroyed when it's heated. This is the ingredient that makes turmeric 20x more effective than taking it alone. So I've started peppering my food after it's cooked.

Thanks Dawn and Mama to Many! I'll take your advice to heart. Adding pepper and ACV after the food is cooked is a good idea. I'll also try the juice with ACV for my little boy now. Thanks again!
