Dog Thyroid Problems

Posted By Sanctuary (Phoenix, Arizona, United States) on 06/10/2012

I found this site while trying to find remedies for my dog's itchy skin. I found several good things to try. I am wondering if anyone has any help for a dog with thyroid problems. My oldest rescue was diagnosed with thyroid issues last year and put on medication to try. Before she finished her first month I lost my job and couldn't afford to take her back to the vet.

She's a Siberian Husky, 10 yrs old and overweight, probably due to the thyroid issue. I plan to try to improve their diet but I'm still catchy up financially and can't afford the vet right now. I'm concerned that if I don't get this under control soon she won't be with me much longer. Does anyone know of something that might help her?

Thank you in advance and thank you for this site.

Please do a google search for low-cost vets in your area. That's the first thing I would suggest.

I'm a member of an online dog forum and a number of dogs have been diagnosed with thyroid issues. Here is a little bit of info that I got from one of the posts:

"Make an appointment with your vet and describe they symptoms and ask that they run a thyroid panel. If he is low (hypothyroid) your vet will put him on medication, pills twice a day most likely.

...The meds are not terribly expensive but the dog must remain on them for life. Also they need to have their blood tested every 6 months to make sure they are receiving he proper amount of medication as somtimes their levels change during the course of treatment."

I don't know whether or not your vet did a thyroid panel; if not, it would need to be done. This test can be expensive, but as I mention above, the meds are not.
