How Should I Time My Slippery Elm Intake?

Posted By Namaw (Al) on 02/28/2017

I am starting Slippery Elm and Marshmallow for my ulcer. Does anyone know how long before or after I can take my other supplements/medications? I have seen 6 hours and 2 hours. I can do 2 hours, but 6 makes it harder to manage. Thanks.

Dear Namaw,

In "Prescription for Herbal Healing, " the author says that slippery elm (any high mucilage content herb) may interfere with the absorption of medications taken at the same time. Neither that author, or herbalist David Hoffman give a guideline for the exact number of hours to wait, unfortunately.

Personally, 2 hours seems quite reasonable to me. You could do medications and supplements 2 hours before so you know they have had time to get into your system. I have not heard of using a 6 hour wait; that seems pretty severe, especially since slippery elm is considered a food.

But of course, everyone is different and with all things, start slowly and keep an eye on effect.

I love slippery elm and marshmallow. Fascinating herbs. I hope they help you tons! Let us know!

Thanks, Mama. That is what I thought, too. It's only been 4 days and I can't really tell a difference yet, or not much. I got Bulk S... brand powder and it doesn't get thicker at all. Easy enough to take. I sprinkle 1 tsp of each in yogurt each morning, mix some into nettle tea at lunch and then 1 more tsp when I get home. I hope it works. I took 1 protonix and my legs cramped up within 10 minutes, so not even going there anymore. Also, I'm watcing what I eat. I love garlic onion and tomatoes, so I'll back off of those. Have an endoscopy in 3 weeks for a recheck. Also, I tried the cabbage juice and just find it hard to fit into my schedule. I'll have to try harder if this elm doesn't do the trick.
