Need Advice for Dizziness Mostly When Lying Flat

Ok, this is weird. I got up during the night to use the toilet and couldn't get very far due to dizziness. I assumed it was due to the melatonin (20 mg) I take nightly. Happened several times, then stopped. Several weeks later, at the gym doing barbell presses and it happened so bad I was afraid I'd drop the thing on myself. It took about 10 minutes to subside enough for me to roll off the bench and sit up, clutching the sides so I wouldn't fall off.

Now, I notice that it happens when I'm flat on my back mostly, occasionally if I look overhead at just the right angle. I went to the dr and he said benign positional vertigo and do these eye exercises--the point is to make yourself a little dizzy so your brain learns to accept dizziness as normal. What? So I do the exercises, but still get the vertigo. I get it mainly when I'm flat looking straight up. This doesn't fit the norm, which is to get it when your head is turned.

Also, I can shut my eyes and walk a straight line without any problem, also not the norm. What do ya'll think? I miss the weight lifting parts I'm now afraid to do. Go to a chiropractor? Do the epley maneuver repeatedly? Also, I've had neck pain for years but they say arthritis and I think that is part of my problem. I eat clean and get the right ratios of minerals, plenty of water, not much sugar/gluten or artificial stuff. If training my brain will do it, then I'll work at that. it just seems like they should look at any physical cause too. I don't think it's menieres because it passes quickly.

Hi GertJr,

Perhaps you can try taking your blood pressure when this happens to see if you're getting a sudden rise or a sudden drop in BP when you lie down. I think a good chiropractor might help. Possibly not only one or more of your cervicals is out, but your atlas too. Another idea is that the dizziness is related to the vagus nerve, which a chiropractor could also treat.

Laying flat, looking straight up...I don't think I can even do that.

One thing I've noticed, if you take something that the body needs before you go to bed, it will do as much work as physiologically possible while you're asleep and out of its way but, sometimes, you have to get up to go to the bathroom and find yourself in a barely functioning state which I've come to think of as the body requiring elimination but not being "done" doing what it's doing yet because if you go straight back to bed and sleep until you wake naturally, it's as if it finishes whatever work its engaged in and then puts everything back to rights for waking/functioning time and you wake feeling fantastic.

But, that lying flat and looking straight up - I don't know...just thinking about it gives me the heebie jeebies! I wonder why that is...I have a sneaking suspicion there's some sort of memory involved with the fear of it but danged if I can think of what it might be...interesting...

That said, I've slept on an incline for about 20 years, so aside from one nightmarish few moments when I had to lay flat on my back for an x-ray, I haven't laid flat for 1/5 of a century!

The first time this happened at the gym, I went straight to the blood pressure table and took it. Was a bit high, but within range. I tend to run on the low end of bp range and the tech always tells me how wonderful that is, until I say not when you faint because it's so low! Dufus, never thought some people can be too low. I have made an appointment with the chiropractor, so waiting now. Funny, but this dizziness comes and goes. Sometimes I get it a lot and others I can go days without. Yesterday I got a wave of dizzy when I tilted my head during a game we were playing (had to grab something with my neck). Strange.
