What Can I Do to Heal Lifelong IBS?

Posted By Namaw (Al) on 01/19/2016

I've been taking align for my ibs-d. Other than fermented foods, what can I take that will get my gut back on track? I've had this ibs-d since before I started school, so 53 years. I feel sure that overuse of penicillin is what started it--we got penicillin for runny noses back then and I was hospitalized several times before age 6 and know that I had massive doses during each of those. I don't want a temporary stop of the diarrhea, I want a permanent fix of the root cause. I know about fermented foods, so what else should I do?

Dear Namaw,

Good to hear from you! I was recently wondering how you and your husband were doing.

For your lifelong IBS, the first things I would try would be milk kefir and slippery elm bark. Both are very nutritious and healing.

I guess Milk Kefir is a fermented food, so maybe you are doing that. We bought kefir grains from amazon or ebay and they have worked wonderfully for making it ourselves.

Slippery Elm Bark can be mixed with water or added to oatmeal or whatever. 1 teaspoon to 1 Tablespoon once or twice a day. Taking some with meals may help.

Keep us posted!
