What Can I Do for IBS in Pregnancy?

Posted By Marilu (Kennett Sq) on 10/01/2015

I need advice on ibs. (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). I've had it for over 5 years and need help. I am pregnant right now and can't take anything for it - my stomach and intestines hurt.

Chamomile tea will greatly assist in healing and it is especially beneficial for the liver, too.

Slippery elm powder will do the same. Both are affordable and have no side effects.

Dear Marilu,

Activated charcoal is considered safe for pregnancy. If you find charcoal tablets, you could take one or two with water when you are feeling discomfort. If you find activated charcoal powder, you can mix 1/4 teaspoon in some water. Charcoal is great for diarrhea. If, however, you are dealing with constipation, you would not want to use the charcoal remedy. Charcoal should not be taken within two hours of medications.

Slippery Elm is a gentle and healing herb and is also considered safe in pregnancy. I sometimes add a spoonful to oatmeal (it will take a lot of extra water) or sometimes I just mix a teaspoon with some water and add a bit of salt and cinnamon and honey. Slippery Elm is nutritious, too, which is important especially when you are pregnant.

I hope you find something that helps you so you can enjoy your pregnancy!
