Trigger thumb in four year old

Posted By Sanjeev (India) on 03/19/2015

Hi, My 4 year old son is having a trigger thumb problem, and doctor has suggested for surgery. I am highly scared about the overdosed anesthesia which causes the death of many kids in India.

Kindly suggest is it possible to cure 100% in any other method without surgery? Will it be dangerous if it's prolonged with natural therapy? Kindly suggest some south indian famous doctors if you know. Thank you for your suggestions.

Dear Sanjeev,

There are many things I would try before surgery!

1. Sesame Oil - massage gently into the joint a couple of times a day and also use it in cooking so he gets some internally each day.

2. Turmeric - 1/4 teaspoon twice a day is what I give a four year old. It is a wonderful anti-inflammatory. I mix it into yogurt or applesauce or honey to get a little one to take it. It should be taken with plenty of water. Some find it to be constipating, though I have never seen this in my family. It is just something to watch for.

3. Epsom Salt - If you can give him a 20 minute Epsom Salt bath three times a week (1 cup Epsom Salt in a tub of warm water) that may be of help.

You could try one, two or all three of the above. If these do not help, you may need to try some dietary changes. If your child drinks carbonated drinks, I would eliminate them.

If your child uses his finger for anything repetitively (like computer games), I would be sure to stop that all together as it could be causing or aggravating the condition.

Let us know how it goes. I am very hopeful that there is a solution that will keep him from surgery!

I was watching John Bergman teach, on youtube, how leaning the head forward can put a pinch in the spine and causes the nerves in the hand to spasm...maybe his neck is out of alignment affecting the wrist, hand, or finger.
