I have a phobia of throwing up. I have had this fear my whole life. As a mother I could not even take care of my kids when they were sick. What can I do to fix this? My phobia has been passed on to my children. I feel like I am going freak out if I am even near somone that is sick to their stomach. Any suggestions PLEASE???

Hi sweetheart, I do understand to an extent as I had a phobia of the dentist and would go, absolutely, to pieces. However was lucky enough to have a very understanding and kind dentist and opted for the anaesthetic so that's has helped somewhat.

Also my mum has emetophobia (fear of sickness) it has been a lifelong problem for her. Began when she was ill once as a child. She became anorexic as she was scared to eat. She has never completely overcome it but what has helped her are breathing techniques, not beating herself up about it and having cognitive therapy in order to retrain the way she thinks about it.

I was the child of a mother with this condition and it hasn't had any effect on me, I realise now that when I was ill as a child she was not around but someone always was so don't be too hard on yourself. I would however look to see if you can find a cognitive therapist, their are also books and breathing techniques can be found on the internet. Sorry I can't give you a cure but with something as deep as this there is no quick fix, but gradual progress is, I think, more beneficial and longlasting anyway. Hugs x
