Dear Waltz,

Congratulations!

Prenatal vitamins are a good idea just to make sure all of the bases are covered. Folic acid is especially important for proper nervous system development.

A variety of whole foods is ideal. Plenty of fruits, vegetables, proteins and complex carbohydrates. Avoid excess sugar and white flour.

Blackstrap molasses is wonderful for pregnancy because of the nutrients. I took 1 Tablespoon a day while pregnant to avoid anemia.

Red raspberry leaf tea, 2-3 cups per day provides nutrients and some believe it helps to make labor go better.

If she is sick in the first trimester, prenatal vitamins may not be well tolerated. In that case, a simple folic acid supplement would do.

I have had pregnancies where I ate pretty poorly the first trimester due to nausea and my babies were no worse for the wear. I ate well the second and third trimester, though.

Protein is important, but very high protein diets tend to yield unnecessarily large (and difficult to deliver) babies.

If heartburn is a problem, I found a capful of apple cider vinegar in each glass of water to help that very much!

I hope all goes well!
