Terrible dizziness both day and night

Posted By Mindy (Dallas, TX) on 03/28/2015

Dizziness, motion sickness like that is worse at night and not associated with positional change. It wakes me up several times every night and keeps me awake. Even though it has some BPPV symptoms, such as dizziness or vertigo, lightheadedness, imbalance, and nausea I do not believe it is BPPV. 2012 examination by an excellent ENT ruled out BPPV. 2010 brain/neck MRI were normal. No outside spinning sensation either. Imbalance or dizziness is NOT worse with a head movement. Motor, sensory, reflexes, cranial nerves and mental status are normal.

I have been having lightheadedness, imbalance on and off since 2008, but never had it at night time. I have been doing vestibular, balance exercises every day for a month now (just in case). Meclizine eases symptoms, makes me able to function somewhat, and so does Diazepam, but makes me lethargic and brain-fogged. But it still wakes me up every night. The other symptoms-sensation of falling into an air pocket, as if a rug was pulled from under me for a split second, or free fall sensation for a brief moment, or as "electric outage", when all lights go off for a split second.

Important details. About a month ago I woke up and shifted in bed and was immediately "sucked into a violent Whirlpool" with complete incapacitation. As if I was paralyzed and spinning inside my head. It continued on and off for 4 hours, with positional change (slight head movement) and without. I believe I blacked out couple of times during these 4 hours. I was in bed the entire 4 hours unable to function.

I've gone through some of this before. It could be a few things combined or just one. First you could have inner ear problem. Second your tension in your neck is too tense. Third you may be low magnesium.

You could buy a kit to use hydrogen peroxide to flush out your ears.

You could use hydrotherapy on your neck. Ice pack 20 minutes then hot pack 20 minutes. Do this a few times rotating hot and cold ending on hot. You can buy them in the gel form in pharmacy or dollar store. I keep the gel ones in my freezer. (Keep a few in there all the time.) For the heat you can put rice in a tube sock , fill half full with any rice and tie off the end and slowly heat in the microwave. DON'T HEAT THIS TOOOOOOO HOT. TRY 30 Seconds then try 30 seconds more. This heat is the best because it's moist heat.

A magnesium (epson salt bath should relax the muscles but take a washcloth in the tub and soak it and put on neck muscles, keep repeateing soaking in the bath water and putting on neck )

Msm cream from pain aisle in the store might help loosen up the muscles in the neck.

Mindy, There is a product from heel.com located in New Mexico called "Lightheadedness." It is a sublingual homeopathic tablet...It works for dizziness in about one minute. A bottle of 100 costs about $12.00. It has worked for everyone I have recommended it so far...Good luck.

It resolves dizziness in less than a minute...The company is located in Albuquerque, N.M. Contact them and they will tell you where to buy it...If you are some kind of health professional they will sell it to you directly. That means being a nurse or massage therapist, or just being in the health field. Their phone number is 800-920-9203...You may find this product in a health food store or they can order it for you. I hope Earth Clinic posts this as I have absolutely no connection with Heel, other than using their products successfully for over 20 years.

Female, 106lb.I have posted before with no real responses. I need help in figuring out the cause of the dizziness I experience. It is hard to explain what I feel- sort of giddy, sort of like a drunk sailor, sort of like my brain flappers in a wind in a wavy motion, with episodes of a heavy thick wave like clouding my brain to the point that I feel that I might pass out, but I don't. It is worse when I lie down, but not always. I have tried pretty much everything. Gluten free for years, take magnesium regularly, drink enough water. Healthy diet, always on top of the latest research in alternative medicine, supplements, diets, life style etc.

Any insight will be appreciated. Meclizine helps somewhat, but the next day I feel groggy on top of being dizzy.

Have you tried seeing a vestibular therapist or chiropractor to have them do the Epley Maneuver on you?

Hi Mindy,

Given what you describe ... I've seen those symptoms a few times. What the way you discuss it I'd suspect, if me, more than just an ear infection which might be causing such dizziness.

If you have had problems with serious ear or sinus or face infection in the past which predated by months or even a year or so these dizziness episodes, an infection that has reached inside the skull.

Talk to your doctor about this possibility. I have used Colloidal Silver with DMSO together in a saturated white cloth placed on back of neck....base of skull. The DMSO is a solvent and carrier...Google "DMSO 60 minutes youtube" and you can see a three part series on DMSO. The CS might kill the infection. I've repeated this a dozen times in a month and as part of protocol I drink two tablespoons of CS twice daily for six months to make sure I kill any lingering infection.

I also get an irrigation into sinuses using an ear syringe and use ear syringe to squirt the CS into both ear canals. I have done that a number of times to make sure infection is out of sinuses and ears.

ALL the above assumes the cause is infection. A guess, but your Doctor might like some ideas. Pass this idea along to him/her and see if that might get some results.

Hi Mindy - Have looked into the possibility that your problem could stem from active trigger points, especially in the sternocleidomastoid muscles? To quote from the book "The trigger point therapy workbook" by Clair Davies:"Another unusual trait of trigger points in the clavicular branch is that they are apt to make you dizzy, nauseous, and prone to lurching or falling. Fainting may occur unexpectedly. This dizziness can last for minutes, hours or days. Often given a diagnosis of vertigo or Meniere's disease, it can become a lifelong recurrent condition, defying all treatments and medical explanations." Check out reviews of this book on Amazon. Best wishes to you.

Do you have any mold issues in your home that might contribute to your issue?

I had dizziness issues 10 or so years ago. Turned out it was my new pillow, formaldehyde treated foam. Do you have a new pillow or one of those foam memory beds?

Mvo: Thank you, will look into this.

Susan and Anon: No mold, no foam pillows.

Thank you, Dave. I did not have ear or sinus infections. My left ear has scars though from the childhood. ENT found no other issues.

I have the same thing. My research points to this: http://vestibular.org/secondary-endolymphatic-hydrops-seh

I found a site that a whole-foods, natural/organic, non-processed diet, plus very clean supplements will help a great deal! So far it has helped mine improved, and seems to be continuing to improve.
