Teen plagued w obsessive compulsive disorder

Posted By Mommyof3 (Fairmont, Wv, Usa) on 07/27/2011

My daugther has been suffering with symptoms of OCD since she was about 11. She remembers a woman telling her once when she was leaving a public restroom without washing her hands that she was going to get sick. She tells me that she always worried about getting sick but that day it really struck her. She began washing her hands profusely. They at times crack and bleed. She is terrified of getting sick throwing up and direaha are the main things. If she thinks someone is sick she panics. She spends most of her time afraid. She has certain rituals she has to do or she feels something bad will happen. She gets thoughts that if she dresses nice she will get sick or if she does her make up she will get sick. She use to have terrible anxiety going out in public but she is better with that now through behaviour therapy I did myself with her and prayer. We need to find out how to treat this. I see so many things that I could use but I am overwhelmed. I need to know what to do where to start. Please help us. She can not even go to school as she is so afraid of the dirt and germs there. She carries hand sanitizer with her. Her favorite birthday presents are bottles of lysol wipes and hand sanitizer as she is afraid she will run out.

Mommyof3, Niacin may help your daughter.<P>Niacin is vitamin B-3, one of the water soluble B-complex vitamins. One of niacin's unique properties is its ability to help you naturally relax and get to sleep more rapidly at night. And it is well established that niacin helps reduce harmful cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. Abram Hoffer, M. D. , Ph. D. explains: "Niacin is one of the best substances for elevating high density lipoprotein cholesterol (the "good cholesterol) and so decreases the ratio of the total cholesterol over<SPAN class=GramE> high</SPAN> density cholesterol."
<P>Another niacin feature is its ability to greatly reduce anxiety and depression. Yet another feature of niacin is that it dilates blood vessels and creates a sensation of warmth, called <SPAN class=GramE>a "niacin flush."</SPAN> This is often accompanied with a blushing of the skin. It is this "flush" or sensation of heat that indicates a temporary saturation of niacin, and that is our topic here.

Hi Mommyof3 - I agree with Debbie from Melbourne about niacin. In addition, I would check out emotional freedom technique (EFT) - it's free and quite effective - certainly worth a try.

Here's a link that might help (it's about using EFT for OCD - although you could use EFT for many other things): http://www.cureocd.com/eft/

There are also videos on youtube in case you want to see how it's done.

Best wishes, Bess
