URGENT: What Can Help Swollen Eustachian Tubes For Past 4 Months?

Posted By Linda (Mesa, AZ) on 09/08/2023

Have swollen eustachian tubes after a head cold. Went into my eustachian tubes and they are swollen shut with sticky mucus inside them. Problem is I have lupus and sjogrens with severe dryness in mouth, nose, and ears. Taking mycophenolate (don't want to) for my autoimmune disorder but not helping. Went to my naturopath who started me on a tincture to hopefully thin the mucus but don't know what to do to reduce the swelling in my tubes that causes me to suffer in agony from the full feeling in my ears. Had this now for 4 months and am ready to go into hospice if I can't get this swelling to go down. Tried about everything and am desperate for maybe some new ideas I haven't tried. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated and welcomed. Thank you to all who respond.

Linda,

N Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) acts as a mucolytic to thin mucous and help it to flow more freely. It is also a potent antioxidant with anti inflammatory effects which may help reduce the swelling.

NAC is also quite useful for Lupus at 1800 mg/day in divided doses. NAC can ameliorate some lupus symptoms as discussed here :

https://trialsjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13063-023-07083-9#:~:text=Conclusion, and complications of lupus disease.

Here are a couple of relevant quotes from the study :

' Taken together, according to the findings of this study, the addition of 1800 mg of NAC to the treatment regimen of patients with lupus can improve the outcome of the disease and can decrease the activity and complications of lupus disease. '

In my experience the addition of vitamin D, grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) at 1200 mg/day, melatonin along with NAC can be very beneficial in alleviating symptoms of lupus.

NAC may also offer some benefit for Sjogren's disease as discussed here :

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11056417/#:~:text=NAC has also been shown, hepatitis C, and myoclonus epilepsy.

A relevant quote :

' NAC has also been shown to be of some value in treating Sjogren's syndrome, smoking cessation, influenza, hepatitis C, and myoclonus epilepsy. '

Vitamin D has also shown some benefit for SS related dry eyes if that is also an issue.

As far as the Sjogren's Syndrome (SS) related symptom of dry mouth, Astaxanthin (24 mg/day) may be helpful as discussed here :

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2935153/#:~:text=These results suggest that Ast administration has a beneficial effect, inducing the scavenging of ROS.&text=8-OHdG (p = 0.008, of saliva in both groups.

Here is a relevant study quote :

' These results suggest that Ast administration has a beneficial effect on salivation in not only patients with SS, but also in normal individuals by inducing the scavenging of ROS. '

If you do not tolerate oral melatonin at night, you can get melatonin naturally from the earlier morning and later afternoon sun exposure of about 15 to 20 minutes per exposure and this should be tolerable.

Good luck and keep us updated on how things work out for you.

Hello Art.

Thank you so much for your reply and information. I was on NAC until my naturopath Dr .told me to stop it because she said it causes further dryness. Which I sure don't need. She has me on a weird tincture that is supposed to help thin the sticky mucus in my e tubes. Only been on it for about a week or so and to keep taking it for a month. She will also be doing acupuncture on my ears. If after a month it hasn't helped she will reevaluate and go with a different treatment plan. Saw my rheumatologist today and he had nothing else to offer me. Giving up on Western medicine which I have never wanted in the 1st place. My love is the natural approach. I'm so frustrated with the deep rabbit hole my medical Drs. put me down and I believe caused me more harm than any good. Once they get you on their meds they think their job is done and won't go any further to check other things that might be contributing to the problem. You have be forceful with them if you want certain testing or any kind of imaging. I knew from the first day I realised my ears were blocked it was because my Sjogrens had destroyed or severely damaged all my moisture and oil producing glands, which there is nothing to repair that. I will give my naturopath time to work on this and if she exhausts everything she can think to do, I'll wait until I can't take it anymore and get on hospice and hopefully go peacefully and not linger too long. I have so many other autoimmune problems that I would go into if your interested. Thanks again Art for your kind response and I will keep you posted how it goes. New to this site so trying to learn how to do things. Right now it's trial and error. You take care and God bless you and yours.

@ Linda

If you follow Barbara O’Neil (Australian Herbalist) these remedies should work for you if you stick with them.

Goldenseal Root Tincture for Sinus Infection https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/sinus_infection4.html#goldenseal

Zaditor Eye Drops for Blocked Eustachian Tubes https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/natural-remedies-for-blocked-eustachian-tubes.html#zed

Linda,

You might try the combo supplement that contains both Quercetin, Bromelain, Stinging Nettle and Vitamin C to facilitate excretion of the mucus reduce the swelling of the eustachian tubes and fend off any allergy issues. Here is a link to such a product :

https://www.amazon.com/Quercetin-Bromelain-Vitamin-Stinging-Nettle/dp/B07RN1BMLQ/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=3PTT4QFAS3CF&keywords=bcm+95+curcumin+boswellia+magnesium+quercetin+bromelain+piperine&qid=1694544472&rdc=1&sprefix=quercetin++bromelain+boswellia+,aps,145&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

This is a synergistic combination that is very useful for nasal issues.
