Supplements for Diabetic Kidneys?

Hi Ted, I just came across Earth Clinic and I found it very informative, I was pleasantly surprised and thankful that there are people offering free advice and their precious time, like yourself, to many desperate people. I would like your advice, please on supplements for my 21 year old daughter, a diabetic (type 1). She was diagnosed when she was 10 years old, no history of diabetes in the family. Her sugar control was mostly bad over the years, worse during her teenage years. It has been improving over the last year with near normal glucose readings. She has been on an insulin pump over the last few months which has helped her greatly. Also, I managed to convince her (it took a few years) to stop all the articial sweetners that she was addicted to. She used to drink diet coke daily, plus artificial sugar chewing gums, sweets etc. She has stopped it about 3 months ago, abstaining completely. She had a bit of diet coke recently and realized that it made her sick, the same with other foods with artificial sweetners. It seems that her body no longer recognises it as a food nutrient (that is not) and has some type of intolerance reaction to it. This is a good thing, as it will ensure that she will never go back to eating aspartame and their derivatives.

Now the bad news! She had blood and urine tests done recently. With the blood test results there was no major issues, but the urine tests showed proteinuria. She repeated the urine test a couple of weeks later and it showed no change, proteinuria again. It seems that her kidneys are no longer filtering properly and are damaged, possibly due to her past bad sugar control and aspartame days. The doctor wants to put her in BP medication to address this, but her BP is only slightly high (130/75) and I think this will improve progressively as her sugar control gets better. I am reluctant to accept the doctor's advice, and she is too. What could we do, naturally, to try to reverse this damage, improve the capillary circulation in kidneys and eliminate the protein in the urine? Which supplements would you recommend? Would assam tea be good, also? I am very grateful for your time and any advice you can give. I apologise for the long post.

I am on BP med for the same issue. Now, it is fine. With the severe dangers or diabetes 1, I think it's silly to want to use supplements instead of doing what the Dr., the specialist, recommends. It is FAR too dangerous to do otherwise. This isn't like a rash or aches and pains. This is a serious issue that can cause irreversible damage. Don't mess around with such an important problem.
