Suggestions Needed for Possible Infection from a Splinter

Posted By Kt (Usa) on 02/10/2017

I had a piece of splinter in the end (pad) of my finger. I put black charcoal salve on it over night under a band aid. This morning it was extremely sore. When I squeezed my finger I could see an area of pus around the piece of splinter but the skin had closed up where the splinter had gone in and it would not "pop" open. I used alcohol and the corner of fingernail clippers to pierce the skin over the area. The pus came out but never saw the piece of splinter. The end and middle joints of my finger are swollen and sore. Maybe there is a piece deeper in that I can't see. I'm going to use A & D under a band aid over night tonight.

Any other suggestions?

Kt, I've seen that a 15 minute soak in vinegar pulled an unseen splinter to the surface on 3 occasions now. For the 3rd one I had to soak it twice.

Baking soda paste under bandage for 24 hours might work.

Dear Mmsg & Charity, Thank you for your suggestions. Before I went to bed that night I had gotten another splinter in another finger and used A & D on both. White Oak was fresh cut and very splintery. I remember my grandmother telling me petroleum jelly would "pull" out splinters. Soreness was gone the next day but fingers still swollen. I think I was having a reaction to the "green" (not real dry) White Oak. One more night with A & D under band aids and all was well! Thank you again for the suggestions.
