Need Help for Burning Mouth Syndrome - Must Avoid Supplements That Increase

Posted By Laurie (Western Wisconsin) on 12/08/2015

I have BMS. It started about 8 months ago. I am 53, post menopausal. I quit eating gluten almost 2 years ago now. The BMS developed after going gluten free. I take vitamin B. My Iron levels and Vitamin B levels were just tested and they are good. I eat healthy, exercise. I take thyroid medicine for hypothyroidism. I have been to a dentist, 2 doctors, and an oral surgeon with no results or help for my burning mouth. I have tried the coconut oil rinses, no relief. I will be trying the Alpha-Liopic Acid, but am a bit worried as one person said their liver enzymes rose after taking it. I have an abnormal slightly elevated bilirubin already. I have had that for several years. I know all these things are related, I just don't know how, and can't find anyone to help me get the answers I need. Doctors just tell me it's an auto immune disorder-that doesn't tell me anything or help at all.

I am looking for any and all suggestions.

Have you considered zinc?

Wishing you well!

Dear Laurie,

It is certainly frustrating when your symptoms have no easy solution and you get a label of autoimmune or idiopathic, with very little reasonable help.

Some things in your post strike a chord with me. I have also been told I have autoimmune disease (ITP - low platelets with no known cause) and have also experiencing burning mouth.

For me, burning mouth is affected by my thyroid. (I take iodine for my low thyroid.) So, while you are on medication, I wonder if you thyroid is still not working as well as it might and if the two are related.

If indeed it is autoimmune, and many think thyroid is often just that, Dave on this site has made some good arguments for autoimmune problems being caused by a virus. I have reason to agree. Regular use of extra virgin coconut oil (which I was doing for my thyroid) seems to have cured my "incurable" ITP. They were in a the normal range when I last had blood work, after being abnormal for 20 years. I did take the coconut oil regularly for at least a year, though. (It didn't take a year to feel better, though.)

So, you might try something anti-viral. 1-3 (start slowly) Tablespoons of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil a day. Or Colloidal Silver (you would want to get your own generator to make it yourself.)

Charcoal poultices or Castor Oil Packs over the liver are two other things that jump out in my mind as things to try. Charcoal has been used to lower bilirubin. I have seen both of these remedies do some amazing things.

These are just a couple of tiny suggestions. There are so many things you could try. Hopefully some others will have some ideas for you too. Meanwhile, keep reading. I am hopeful that you can find a solution and will feel better soon.

Hi,

Just had a diagnosis of this, coincided with diagnosis of advanced gum disease. Just wondering if things have improved for you.

I too have just been told that I have BMS. It is extremely depressing that there is no solution to it. I have tried most ideas from this site and other locations. I think the hardest part is just the day to day coping.
