Room Spinning From Vertigo, Please Suggest Home Treatments

Posted By Stephanie (Long Valley, Nj) on 03/12/2022

What would help vertigo? I am in and out of vertigo, room spinning, its unbearable. I don't feel comfortable putting anything in my ear. I did try peroxide on a qtip gently in my ear. I took a ginger capsule. Any homeopathic that might help? Or any ideas that I could take at home please? Its very scary when I am in full vertigo. thank you!

Hi Stephanie,

If it is caused by ear crystals being out of place, the Epley Maneuver should work. I found youtube videos to do this to myself for vertigo once and it worked! I think I had to repeat the process once or twice.

Putting hydrogen peroxide in my ears tends to aggravate vertigo for me.

Stephanie,

A word of caution with the Epley Maneuver, with some people, when self-performing the procedure to realign the crystals, it is fairly common to experience the urge to vomit or actually vomit in rare cases. This can be shocking and scary at the same time if you are not expecting the possibility of it happening. Many of the Youtube videos do not warn of this possibility. Now you are aware of this potential and will be mentally prepared if it occurs. Good luck and please come back to tell us how it worked for you!

This can also cause a temporary worsening of dizziness and I have seen it take up to 4 tries to get the best effect and sometimes it needs to be repeated days or weeks later in order to get the optimal effect.

Here is a Youtube link to multiple videos demonstrating how to do it yourself :

Hi Art and Mama to Many,

I am still in and out of vertigo. its horrible, I am scared to try the epley maneuver and scared not to. I have a container next to me if I get sick. I am severely immune compromised, so I don't go to the hospital, doctors, and am not around people, so if the epley helps, It will be life saving. If anything goes wrong, and I get into permanent vertigo, I don't have anyone to help, that's why I am afraid to try the epley, in case it makes crystals get stuck and I go into permanent vertigo. When not in full vertigo, like now, I am so nauseous and feel very weak, and the slightest move puts me into vertigo.

Hi Stephanie,

I am very sorry to hear you are experiencing so much pain and nausea and cannot seek help outside your home. The only thing I have to add here is to please make sure you are not consuming any high histamine foods or drinks like apple cider vinegar. One of the many side effects, if you are sensitive, can be vertigo. I speak from personal experience on that one. Honey too, as odd as it sounds, can cause vertigo. So please look at what you eat and see if anything could potentially be causing it. Finally, do you supplement with potassium? A potassium deficiency can also cause many an ailment. Hope you feel better very soon.

Stephanie,

First you can consider the options that Deirdre suggested and if those don't resolve your vertigo, you can try the following so you won't be alone when you do it.

Some physical therapists will perform the EM and perhaps you can call around locally to PTs to see if one in your area will do it. Many PTs do house calls these days and perhaps you can find one who will come to you and perform the EM on you.

Thank you Deirdre and Art!

I still feel horrible. I do take ACV and honey, but not consistently. So I will make sure if I use them, just a tiny amt. I do feel like my left ear is clogged, I have extreme tinnitus, and tmj, since a botched tooth extraction Dec 2020. But that is the right side. Tinnitus is so loud that my hearing is worse, and the tmj causes me to have less control of my tongue and jaw since the tooth extraction, like mini mouth seizures, photophobia, and many other symptoms. So I thought it was my right ear because of that, but the spinning is worse when I tip my head to the left. So I need to do the adjustment of ear crystals first for the left side. I will have to do it alone, just haven't had the courage yet. I want to get better asap, but am afraid if it is worse. I also am dehydrated from Sjogren's, and also have low blood sugar and low blood pressure, because I have often heavy menstrual bleeding. So the vertigo is likely ear crystals, plus low blood pressure. everything I read is for high blood pressure and high blood sugar, so not sure what to do for the lows. Also, unfortunately can't handle Melatonin, it makes my blood pressure lower I guess. So because I am immune compromised, It would be hard to fight covid, without being able to take the melatonin, so that is why I am staying away from other people and germs. I don't like being alone, but I have to get my immune system up first. It's scary feeling sick when you're alone, Thank you for being there for me!

Let us know if the EM is able to help the dizziness. GL!

As a side note, the displaced crystals can cause tinnitus.

Under your doctor's approval and guidance, he may allow you to increase your salt intake to try and raise your blood pressure as low pressure can create balance issues also.

I have quite a history of severe vertigo. It was very difficult on and off for years, but now for 15 years it has been usually absent. The thing that has helped me the most is a Chinese medicine called Golden Book herbal (Jin Kui Shen Qi Wan). It is tiny little black pills, supports kidney function and the balance of yin/yang. Years ago a Chinese herbal practitioner gave me a similar one with (I think) a slightly different name that I used for very effectively for 3 years, then it stopped working. I went back again and she changed me to this one and it has worked very well for years. I started with maybe four tiny pills with each meal and daily increased to 8 pills per meal (or more if necessary). These days I take two pills with each meal. Best wishes to you!

I've had some super low blood pressure, so much I almost fainted. The thing that helped me the most was potassium-rich foods. Avocado and swiss chard are especially good for potassium! Also potato (with skin might be important, I'm not sure), acorn squash, bananas oranges. You can Google it. Any electrolytes wlil bring blood pressure up. For a while, I was carrying salt pills with me in case I needed one, but too much salt gets hard on my stomach. Potassium is wonderful for so many things in the body and it turns out most people are low in potassium.

Best wishes to you!

My father had this issue years ago. He went to the Balance Center affiliated with a local hospital. It didn't take many visits, they put him through exercises and on a swing to get the crystals in his ears back where they belonged. He had a few simple sitting exercises to do at home. It was easy and it worked fast, he never a problem again. He had been miserable, dizzy, sick to his stomach, and had blurry vision. I think most doctors could get you into a Balance Center, a clinic that specializes in this issue. I wish you the best.

Another cause for vertigo and BPPV, is calcium deficiency.

Calcium is what ultimately stopped my vertigo after B12 and copper glycinate no longer worked.

I take a calcium chelate in addition to food with it.

Here's a paper about it. They include vitamin D which enhances calcium uptake. Vitamin D also increases phosphorus uptake. If someone has been calcium deficient for a long time, phosphorus can bind calcium and cause crystal deposition.

I would recommend that someone makes sure that they don't have too much phosphorus to calcium before increasing vitamin D.
