Need Remedies to Heal Extra Dry Skin in Teenager After Cellulitis

Posted By A Concerned Mommy (Sacramento Ca) on 05/07/2017

My 13 yr old daughter had cellulitis pretty bad on her arms, tummy, and a small area on her neck. She has completed the course of antibiotic pills and the cream did wonders. It dried up those tiny areas which together created big areas of painful bloody, and even blistering patches or sections. Her arms are the worst. Its all up and down and on both arms. So after using perscribed meds my baby is left with these little rings of dry skin which is a tad darker than her normal skin color. She is a bit worried and tries to hid it from other children at school. Kids can be so hurtful and mean to each other and She is afraid of what will be said if seen. Plz help I will do whatever I can do in order to get my babies skin as close to back to normal as we possibly can.

Coconut oil will work well to help keep the skin moisturized and ameliorate the dry areas as well as help to prevent reinfection with its antibacterial and antiviral properties. It penetrates well and should be applied as needed. If there is a Trader Joe's in your area they keep it stocked on their shelves at a reasonable price or you can order it on line. Sam's Club and Costco carry it also, but of course those will be large containers.

The slightly darker areas are probably post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The doctor can prescribe the standard anti hyperpigmentation prescription ointments, but if your daughter has normally darker skin or tans easily, you might try milder natural treatments first because the prescription ointments can sometimes cause a worsening of the hyperpigmentation because they are somewhat irritating themselves.

You can make your own gentler product by adding niacinamide and N Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) to her favorite water based lotion. About 5% niacinamide and about 5% NAG. NAG is not the same as glucosamine that is typically used as an arthritis supplement. If you don't want to make it yourself, you can get a ready made product such as Oil of Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream Face Moisturizer that already has those two ingredients in it, but it is more expensive than making your own so you will need to make sure she applies it sparingly to the hyperpigmented areas only. It will take time to reverse the post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and your daughter should use a very strong sunblock on those areas before going out in the sun.
