Remedies Not Helping Itchy Rash on Shin, Please Help

Posted By Trudy (South) on 06/18/2017

About a month ago, I shaved my legs as usual. Later that day, I noticed that I was absent-mindedly scratching my right shin. When I looked at it, I had a rash and so I put regular lotion on it. Since then, it's only gotten worse. It is not dry skin or ingrown hairs, but a red rash that is fairly flat. Family has asked when I scraped myself, it looks like a healing scrape. Yesterday I noticed that I'm getting this same kind of red spot near my ankle and more over to the side of my leg.

I started off putting thieves oil on it, then used tea tree oil, triple-antibiotic ointment, benadry gel, wet ones (in case it's something like staph), h2o2, acv, iodine and now neem. I can't get any relief from the itch and it doesn't seem to be improving at all. Should I see a dr? Or what else should I do?

I already take probiotics, vit c, turmeric, borax and other supplements. Also, I have not shaved this leg since, thinking razor burn, but that should have cleared up. I can make some colloidal silver, since I'm out of it.

Have you tried using Witch Hazel? Also, are you eating or taking anything different? Our food is changing and reactions are going to differ.

I had the same problem in May. After investigating, it was a healing reaction from the borax. My rash which was located on the left leg calf area seemed to be coming from within my body whereas, for instance, a poison ivy rash would sit on top of the skin. I stopped borax until my skin felt calm and then resumed. I've had no problems since.

Trudy, I have found coconut oil -the real one that smells like coconut! - to relieve itching from just about any cause.

I have had something similar for nearly 4 years. Have been to the doctors and dermatologist with no luck. Tried all the things that you have and a lot more. The best thing I have found is bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) solution wiped on, or wet some cotton wool, dip in the powder and rub in, leave it to dry. Not gone, but vastly improved. Try it on a small area for a few days, just to make sure it doesn't cause you any bad reactions. Other things you could try are epsom salt baths or charcoal poultice (I found a charcoal face mask which was quite good). The worst things were creams and lotions. If you find something better please let us know. All the best:)

Thanks so much--I'll bet it was the borax! I tend to go overboard when trying new things, so I started the borax at the usual dose instead of starting slow. Also, I don't sip when I drink--I down the whole liter of water pretty fast instead of spreading it over time like a normal person. So, I'll try the witch hazel and Virgin Coconut Oil for the itch and stop the borax for a week or so and see if I improve. Thanks!

And Trudy if none of that stops the itch,

When no one is looking just put a little foot care anti-fungal cream on it. it stops almost any kind of itch in one use.

Hi again Trudy,

Hisjewel suggested "foot care anti-fungal cream" and reminded me when our daughter had a ringworm our nurse practitioner advised I could use the OTC Miconazole Nitrate Cream. She also advised that whether athlete's foot, ringworm or yeast infection, it is the same fungus. I got the generic from Dollar General and it worked great!

My shin seems to be getting better, but now I have an itchy flaky thing going on just above my eyelids. Both sides itch & flake, looks awful. I washed them with baby shampoo this morning and put on aquaphor but by lunch time it was all I could do to stop picking at them to pull off the flakes. I'm miserable. Will get the fungal cream on my way home today.

Hi Trudy, check your symptoms up against blepharitis and conjunctivitis. There are lots of remedies here for both.

I've looked at blepharitis & conjunctivitus and my symptoms don't really fit. My eyelids are not crusted and my eyes aren't particularly red--the area just below my eyebrows is the issue. As it looks like the treatments are pretty much the same, I'll keep on doing the baby shampoo +tea tree oil 2x/d. I just used straight tea tree oil w/ a qtip because the itch was so bad, it kind of migrated into my eyes & stung but not so bad. This is a strange thing, for sure.

To Trudyg: I had a similar issue. I used diluted (with distilled water) organic ACV and applied some with a Q-tip to the area that was itching (in my case it was under my lower lashes). Turns out it was eczema, and the ACV totally cleared it up.
