Hi Sara27... You might want to read this article from Dr Abraham who initiated something called the Iodine Project. This project, which is perhaps the most up to date current research on the benefits of Lugol's Iodine, notes how iodine can be used to successfully help cure problems like hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, breast cancer, fibrocysitic breast disease, obesity, uterine fibroids and allergies etc.

Here is the pertinent article:
http://www.iodine4health.com/special/nutrients/magnesium/abraham_magnesium.htm

In the article, Dr Abraham recommends a combination of large dose magnesium(800 - 1200mgs/day) together with Lugol's Iodine(12. 5 mgs/day) for hyperthyroidism. Please note that these dosages are deliberately well above the recommended RDA for both Iodine and Magnesium.

The complex biological and biochemical explanation by Dr Abraham's may be simply translated into this explanation: Due to excess, unregulated Calcium in the body because of deficient body magnesium and/or excess calcium in the diet, this interferes with the body's iodine feedback regulation system, thus encouraging excess production of hormones by the thyroid gland. Magnesium (as Mag Chloride, Mag Citrate or Mag Gluconate are the best forms to take) is what helps to regulate calcium in the body properly.

I would also add Vitamin C(3000 mgs/day), Coenzyme Q10(30 - 200 mgs/day) and Selenium(200 micrograms/day) to this therapy, since an over-active thyroid can also be caused by over-production of dangerous free radicals in the body -- which causes thyroid damage. Therefore Vitamin C(as Ascorbate powder) and CoQ10 will counteract and will help stop the oxidative thyroid damage and Vitamin C and Selenium will also both help the thyroid gland to repair itself.
