It may seem like a common answer, sweetie-- but I am living proof that 12 step programs work, if you work it. I am 26 years sober, by God!
The trick is to find someone as a sponsor who has worked all the 12 steps themselves, first, and whose life appears to be peaceful, joyous and free, despite how life treats them. Ask that person to be your "temporary sponsor, " to see if it is a good fit, first.
I have long believed this to be both genetic and a nutritional deficiency in the body somewhere, a condition handed down. Some have said B-Vitamins help.
