Protecting thyroid and salivary glands during radiation

Posted By Clarity (Los Angeles, Ca) on 05/07/2012

First I want to thank EC for this amazing site, the most intelligent go-to for alternative remedies.

My husband in now undergoing radiation therapy for cancer on his vocal cords. Stage 1A. I understand that the radiation will alter the function of his thyroid, and in essense burn the salivary glands. Does anyone know of a protocol to preserve these glands during RT? I would be so grateful to hear your suggestions.

Perhaps Bill or Ted could comment?

Many thanks, Clarity

Hi Clarity... The following will help to protect your husband's thyroid and salivary glands before and after after radiation therapy on his vocal chords:

* Orally supplement Lugol's Iodine(4 to 8 drops a day in 4 split doses outside mealtimes) OR using SSKI in similar manner OR taking liquid kelp extract every day will help to defend and protect the thyroid.

• Introduce more chlorophyll-rich foods into your husband's diet, such as seaweed, kelp, blue-green algae, spirulina, and chlorella. These plants contain rich minerals, including iodine, that bind up the receptors site in your thyroid so that any radioactive iodine that you end up being exposed to will be unable to harm your thyroid. These foods also contain potent antioxidants, like selenium, that prevent destructive free radical activity and cancerous growth, as well as chelating agents that bind to toxins and eliminate them from your body.

*Eat antioxidant-rich foods of every color, especially cherries, blueberries, pomegranates, yams, and sweet potatoes. The variety of antioxidants found in these foods help your body to mop up free radicals and toxins.

* Alkalize using Ted's Alkalizing Remedies to alkalize both the blood and the body cells. See this link:

* Supplementing with Alpha Lipoic Acid(300 mgs twice a day) , Selenium(200 mcg twice a day), Milk Thistle(1000 mgs twice a day) and N-Acetyl Cysteine(500 mgs twice a day) at mealtimes will also help to give strong anti-oxidant support to the thyroid and salivary glands. This protocol also helps to generate glutathione and glutathione peroxidase -- two very useful and protective anti-oxidants that specifically help to protect not only the thyroid but also the liver as well.

* Supplementing Vitamin C (as Ascorbate) will also help to heal the damage more quickly after radiation. Take 3000 mgs or more of Vitamin C in three split doses a day. Taking regular doses of Vitamins D and E would also be useful.
