Progesterone Use in Pregnancy

Posted By Drew (Preeceville, Saskatchewan, Canada) on 09/28/2016

I am 6 weeks pregnant and went to the ER with concerns about my pregnancy. My doctor has put me on progesterone suppositories 3 times a day for the next 14 weeks. I have done 2 of my pills today. Is it normal for it to cause aching, similar to when you get your period, and some bleeding? I have been through 2 miscarriages and am just wanting to make sure I am doing it right this time.

Dear Drew,

I am not familiar with progesterone causing bleeding or aching in pregnancy, and I have used progesterone in pregnancy. It has helped many ladies to maintain pregnancy if low progesterone has been the cause of miscarriage in the past.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong and would continue with the progesterone as long as your doctor would think it wise.

Any time that you have bleeding or cramping in pregnancy, it is a good idea to take it easy and stay off your feet as much as possible.

Warm (but not hot) Epsom Salt baths (1 cup epsom salt) can help with cramping as your body absorbs the magnesium from the epsom salt and that can ease cramping.

An herbal supplement that some have used to maintain a pregnancy when there has been a history of miscarriage is on this link.
