Since Radiation As Toddler for Enlarged Thymus, I've Had Chronic Diarrhea a

I had radiation as a toddler for an enlarged thymus gland (this was quite common back then, I don't think I was ill but many people my age had it, too). That was sometime between 1957 and 1959. My mother had radiation on her thyroid while pregnant with me. So, I've had radiation but don't know what kind, dose, etc. Mother had chronic constipation starting with her radiation and I have had chronic diarrhea since I was 5 or so years old. Has anyone heard of ibs as a side effect of radiation? I google it and there are lots of entries. But, my question, is there something I can do about the ibsd and this late date? Everyone recommends so many things--fodmaps, fiber, etc--but none of that works for me. Is there any hope for me?

In reply to Hopeful (Usa),

Please look into melatonin studies available for free on the web that clearly show that melatonin is useful as a radioprotectant as well as repairing radiation damage and is also useful for ameliorating IBS symptoms.....especially IBS-D!

Here are two links to full studies to help you get started on your research:

Melatonin, as I have mentioned previously is one of my favorite supplements with an excellent safety profile, is naturally produced in multiple areas of the body, readily available, has MULTIPLE HEALTH BENEFITS and is inexpensive! If it was patentable, pharmaceutical companies would be all over it! In general, melatonin is gut and organ protective, but I doubt you ever heard that from a doctor!

Good researching and health to you, Hopeful!

Hopeful, something easy and harmless to try first is a glass or two of chamomile tea a day.
