Need advice regarding graves disease

Posted By Molly (Minneapolis, Mn) on 08/16/2011

I was diagnoised with Hyperthyroidism when I was 16, I was immediatley treated with Iodine Radiation... And shortly became Hypo afterward. As I am getting older, and realizing that I have been on synthroid and ateneol since I was 16 (9 1/2 years) is really starting to bother me. I have two healthy and beautiful children, and I feel unhealthy, and like this disease has cut my life in half. I have my good days, and I have my bad days. I'm completely bald in the front and on the sides (Been wearing wigs since I was 21)... I have the bulging eyes ( I look like a frog)... I'm sure people think I'm high or on drugs most of the time... but it's like why bother explaining.

My glasses and sunglasses do a good job at hiding the shame. Sometimes my eyes will go back in my head on their own... I have the sweating, the nervousness, racing mind/thoughts, slurred speech, double vision (going blind), sensitivity to cold... And sometimes overly hot... My heart beats fast when resting.. And then sometimes I feel like it stops.. And then begins again... Or sometimes it double beats... It just does weird things. I'm moody and irritated.. Short tempered and mad for no reason. I'm like pms'ing just about everyday it seems... My legs and fingers go numb... I feel like my bones are Brital.. And my body aches a lot.. Sometimes I get unbearable pain in my eyes.. But at this point, I'm use to it. I get so tired and exhausted.

I'm just so young, and so tired of letting this disease take over my life. I have to beat it. I see my first endocrinologist this Thursday (what should I expect)??? Believe it or not, I've never seen one. Only my idiot family doctor who just keeps feeding me synthroid and atenenol and telling me to diet and lose weight. She doesn't seem to have the slightest idea, of how physically, emotionally, and mentally this graves disease is. No one actually understands how I feel sometimes. I envy so much to function like a healthy adult again. I don't know why I was cursed with this disease at such a young age. I don't talk about it much with friends and family, and figured it was time to do some long overdue 9 1/2 year research, and find a cure.

Any advice? Any remedies?

I currently take 150mg synthroid, 50mg atenolol, Multivitamin, Vitamin Cw/ Vitamin D and Fish Oil...

Should I be test for vitamin deficiencies? Should I be test for food allergies? Also, I don't know if my thyroid/graves disease was caused by lack of iodine or not... Should I find out the underlying problem?

Molly from MN, So sorry your are suffering, and so sorry the medical profession is too myoiptic, self serving and downright dangerous. Get off the synthetic thyroid meds, up until recently Armour Thyroid was the best medicine as it is of dessicated thyroid, taken by many generations successfully. In the last 2/3 years Armour Thyroid company sold to Forest Labs and they messed with the formulation so to create a new patent. Now Armour Thyroid is useless and making alot of people sick....

Please go to: www.StopTheThyroidMadness.com

Also visit: http://thyroid.erfa.net/ (purest med. here)

Anyone who's on thyroid meds look at this resource, and educate yourselves.

Be well,

Clara

Molly, I am so sorry to hear of all the suffering you have gone through over the years. I feel for you as I and my 15 year old daughter both have been diagnosed with this terrible disease. I agree that you should stop the synthitic thyroid meds. Though it sounds like you may be Hyper again anyways and if so then the endo will want you to go off of them for sure. I have seen endo's and they really are not much different than a GP but they at least will have more insite as to what is going on as a GP doesn't know alot about anything but a little about a lot:) I would go to your appt. With the understanding that you need to know what is going on internally. Find out your lab results and know that you are in control of your body not them. If the endo says he wants to change your meds, do surgery, or anything else... Do research and make sure you agree. If you don't and he/she won't do as you wish change endo's or go to a naturopath.

I have treated both myself and my daughter's Graves holistically and I know it can be done. I believe all immune diseases are caused by imbalances in our mineral and vitamens. Whether over time or recent it may be something you can change by finding out what is missing or deficient and what is too high. I found the most helpful info both hear on this website and on www.ithyroid.com. I would love to help you out if you have any questions I check this website regularly:)
