My son has fpies cant eat wheat and dairy

Posted By Ferial (Sandton, South Africa) on 11/17/2014

My almost 14 month old boy was diagnosed with Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) at 4 and a half months old, he had an acute reaction to wheat and had to be hospitalized. We were told to try solids at a later date which went ok initially but very slowly, at 13 months he was only eating 4 foods, we thought we could try Dairy in the form of baby yogurt, but again he reacted severely and off to the ER we went again, we have now decided to give his gut a rest and just continue breastfeeding, we are apprehensive to start solids again, Can anyone assist? Desperate Mommy..

Ferial, I've seen children thriving on just nursing even till 24 months with no adverse effects. So I wouldn't worry too much.

Dear Ferial,

I agree with Mmsg that long term breastfeeding is a very good solution for your child. In some cultures it is normal to nurse a child in terms of years instead of months. Several of my children nursed for 2 years. One consumed no solid food until he was 16 months old (because of food allergies, it seems. He is an adult and fine now.)

Anyway, your child is blessed to have the breastmilk option. Just take care of yourself and keep up your milk supply. Then, as you were, take the addition of foods very slowly with him.
