Hi All,

My Father (70 years old - from INDIA) is suffering form psoriasis since last 15 years. This has now spread all over his body. He tried everything from Allopathic, Homeopatich to Ayurvedic and now is afraid of trying anything else.

Any suggestions on tried home remedies are desperately welcome. Thanks all for this wonderful website and info.

I have had psoriasis since I was a toddler. It was such a struggle when I was a child since doctor's had no idea how to treat it back then. I finally got permanant relief from an awesome dermatologist. I told her that I always got better in the sunlight. She knew exactly what would help me then. She gave me a perscription of straight vit D ointment. I applied it to each of my psoriosis spots dailey for about 2 to 3 weeks and they have never returned since. That was 9 years ago. I don't know if I was just really vit D deficient or what. I do live in Montana so it's possible. I think you could take some vit D capsules and mix them with lanolin or something very hypoallergenic and rub this mixture on your fathers psoriasis. The cream I bought was really expensive. If I ever have another break out I will make my own cream.

Here's what I've done - I've had it my entire life (30 years) and it pops up in new places and the severity changes often, UNTIL I started making the following changes to my diet and lifestyle.. Here's what I found made my flare ups worse and what has worked for ME.

Meat & dairy aggravates it. If I stick to a vegan diet -i have less psoriasis problems and any patches I might have start to clear up. When I start pigging out on non-organic meats and fast foods - I notice a change in my skin quickly. So when I start eating too much fast food (or bad-for-you-food in general) it shows in my skin in a couple weeks. Vegan is best for me, but if I'm not eating vegan I try to stick to organic as much as possible.

For scalp psoriasis, (mine flared up the worst I ever had in my life. It got to the point where it was oozing from the skin scaling). I started taking GSE (grapefruit seed extract) to make sure I didn't have any yeast build up and to make sure to kill any infection if there was one- and I cut out sugars temporarily (which feeds yeast). I put GSE in and on everything. I put GSE drops in my water (3x day), in my shampoo and conditioners, plus I used a shampoo called psoriatrax which has the highest amount of coal tar you can find - it's pricey but it's WORKS better for ME than Tgel or the other psoriasis shampoos you can get. I also put GSE drops into all my body lotions and creams - I basically wanted to make sure I got it on my skin as often as possible - during my daily routine. (this way it didn't feel like a chore). The amounts are on the bottle. I took just under the maximum recommended amount I could internally daily.

Also for full body psoriasis and eczema (I had it on my scalp, in my ears, armpits, groin as well as patches on my body) all of that went away when I did the above items AND started taking 5,000 vitamin D3 a day (I work from home so I don't get a lot of natural sunlight), plus a good quality multivitamin and some type of omega 3 as well. My omega 3 is flaxseed based because I would get those fish burps even if I took the pills frozen.

It took some time, but over a period of 8 months now since it was that bad (i had a flare up from the stress of moving to a different state and that's how long I've been here) adding all the things in that I mentioned above ---- I only have one small patch on my scalp left, and I had it like I said, on my scalp, groin, armpits, ears, and patches over the rest of my body. I was even getting patches on my face - and that had never happened to me before! My ears were so bad they would fill with fluid and half the day I couldn't hear - but I mixed in a VERY small amount of gse with an ear cleaning solution every so often and they cleared up - no problems with them now.

Also, the lotions I used were Eucerin calming creme and pure shea butter only - anything else irritated my skin and would make things worse. Whenever I get a new bottle of body wash (dove or Dr. bronners) or lotions or shampoos, I put my GSE drops in there right away - so I don't have to worry about it.

My flare up started right before my move and like I said, been here for 8 months . The only things I do now (since it's not flared up right now) is take my daily supplements of the multi, omega3 and vitamin D. I also sometimes take turmeric, garlic and cayenne for inflammation (I use the computer a lot) so I don't know if that also plays a role in my psoriasis or not. But I only take the GSE INTERNALLY now randomly, because it's done it's job and I only use the coal tar shampoos when I have a flare up - you shouldn't use that coal tar stuff all the time.

So to sum it up:

  • GSE drops internally to kill off yeast which makes psoriasis worse
  • Cut back on sugars and breads - which feed the yeast
  • Cut back on meats & dairy (if you think that causes flare ups for him)
  • GSE drops externally in the creams/lotions/body washes (if there is any cracking or broken skin it keeps it from getting infections from scratching)
  • Eucerin Calming Creme - really keeps things moisterized which helps with any cracking or broken skin that may develop
  • Vitamin D3 (At the most I used 10, 000 daily, but my regular is 5, 000 because I work from home and don't get a lot of natural sunlight - so you'll need to figure out what works for him)
  • Omega 3
  • Multivitamin
