Please search "smell training".

Briefly one uses essential oils and sniffs them several times a day.

Also some research supports Alpha lipoic acid 600 mg twice daily. Very safe.

Good luck.

From what I read, Covid uses up zinc in the body. Zinc deficiency can cause a loss of the ability to smell.

It takes years to grow your sense of smell back - it grows at a rate of 1mm per year. BUT, I used different smells to grow mine. I used Vicks Vapour Rub and held it at my chin and breathed deeply so I could smell it (then later my waist, then the floor...)

I never got tested but I'm sure I had Covid back in January 2020 before most of us even knew it existed. I had symptoms that I had never had before, such as: lost my sense of taste and smell like your friend, but I didn't have difficulty talking. I also completely lost my appetite and I couldn't take full breaths of air. Felt extremely weak, tired all the time, lost weight, had pain as well.

Here's how I got better! I drank 1 teaspoon of Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar (any unfiltered, raw Apple Cider Vinegar would work) in a glass of filtered or spring water (no tap water) 3 times a day after a meal. Always add it to water, it will burn your throat if you don't! I also consumed 1 teaspoon of organic, cold pressed Coconut Oil 3 times a day after a meal. I took both together after my meals. I don't know why they worked for me, but they did. I took them both until all my symptoms were completely gone, it took awhile, but it worked! Hope your friend gives it a try and it works for them too!

Research melatonin. I heard it could help restore taste.

Yes, zinc helps with that. 50mg by mouth every day.

Works for me. This is not medical advice. Quiet possibly recover sense of taste supplementing with zinc. Begin low dose 15 mg a day. Increase to 50 mg a day if needed.

Hazel,

I had a mild case of Covid early in November. The longest lasting symptoms were apathy and loss of taste. I began using the following as soon as felt symptoms coming on: zinc, echinacea, Vit C (mostly natural such as orange/tangerines) and Vit D.

To help with keeping the lung congestion in check, I also used ginger, turmeric and cayenne mixture in tea form a couple times a day. I truly believe all of this helped tremendously. But I was apathetic about most everything for about a month afterward. The loss of taste lasted somewhat longer. Even now 3 months later, I have periodic bouts of things not tasting correct, but it has slowly returned. I think it is one of those things that has no quick fix, and has to come back naturally as the body heals.

I recently had covid myself with loss of taste and smell. What has been helping with the loss of taste and smell has been Alpha Lipoic Acid 600mg 2 times a day. Also Sulphurophane (concentrated broccoli sprout extract and Barleans omega 3 oil, key lime. Good results in 2 weeks.

For over 60 plus year I have been told that the loss of taste or smell is as a result of zinc deficiency. I know we are told not to take large amounts of zinc, but for many years I took 100mg or more every day. Everyone must make their own decisions on what and how much to take. Pray on it.

Be Well,

Ed

I have been reading about this loss of taste and sense of smell and read that you need to take copper to get it back.

I lost my sense of smell due to zinc deficiency. Covid also burns through zinc, and bioavailable copper. But taking a zinc supplement like Zn picolinate alone is short term ok, but bad for copper long term. Best to eat something like oysters (high in both zinc and copper). Zinc ionophores might also be relevant eg quercetin. Make sure iron levels are not high, as iron feeds infections eg ferritin under 40, saturation under 35%. Iron chelation is being used in covid treatment. Natural iron chelators include cabbage, Bragg Apply Cider V, green tea, quercetin, lactoferrin, IP6. Cheers.

Lost of taste and smell may be as symptom of zinc deficiency.

Zinc is a mineral that your body uses for fighting off infections. It’s important for healing injuries and creating DNA, the genetic blueprint in all of your cells. If you’re not getting enough zinc in your diet, you may have side effects such as hair loss, lack of alertness, and a reduced sense of taste and smell.
