As of Wednesday evening, here is the latest for Washington State (west coast) that I have found re radiation from Japan:
- Most of the radioactive material is contained at the damaged plants; even if radioactive material reaches the upper atmosphere, it would not reach Washington in concentrations high enough to cause a health risk.
- The radioactive material that was released did not reach the upper atmosphere where it could be carried toward North America by the jet stream in amounts that would cause public health impact.
- The fires and explosions at the Japanese reactors have not been as intense as the Chernobyl accident. Radioactive material ejected into the jet stream from Chernobyl did reach Washington in small amounts. Even after the Chernobyl disaster, protective action was not needed in our state, and the Japan incident is much smaller than Chernobyl.
- Even if radioactive material is released in Japan and reaches the jet stream, it would take several days to get here because the nuclear plants are about 5, 000 miles from our state. In the time it would take to cross the Pacific, it would mix with lots of air as it's blown in the wind (thus diluted); rain would wash some of the material from the air into the ocean.
- Radioactive decay, especially for short half-life radioactive materials such as iodine-131, would substantially reduce the amount of the radioactive material that could reach here.
For these reasons, it's unlikely that we will see an increase in background levels of radiation in Washington. Even if a small amount of radiation did reach us, it would be well below levels that would pose public health concerns.

I read this as well, and it was alarming. However, I do not think high levels of radiation will reach the United States. According to CNN, most of the radiation will have dissipated and is assumed to be fortunately, quite harmless.
Clearly, this is new territory for all of us, and asking questions as to how to protect ourselves and our loved ones, is not such a bad thing. Rhonda , I am certain you will find your answer, and when you do, please share it with the rest of us. Thank you.

Fact is many west coast babies are now born with low thyroid.
It will not go away by ignoring it.

As for "a healthy ocean, " we should ask what is the motivation behind grocery store placards. To find our way among the outrageous, unsupported claims from both sides of the nuclear issue it is helpful to read the reports of engineers, physicists, biologists, and MD's unallied with government or industry. The "plume" that is supposed to be making its way across the Pacific is nothing like the computer models (computer models are not science). It is neither arriving intact to the West Coast nor becoming diluted as it goes. The radiation more likely is traveling in diverse, small, concentrated plumes, paths and destinations mainly unknown, since there is almost no monitoring.
ENE News posts articles from both the main stream media (usually retractions and corrections of earlier industry and government announcements) as well as alternate sources. It's a place to observe the monstrous coverup that is going on as well as the variety of alternate accounts.
We must turn off the TV and read. And ask questions. And shop very carefully. This is reasonable, not panic or hysteria, as some posting here have claimed.
Does your grocery store have a bulletin board? You might post information about the state of the Pacific Ocean.

We live in the end times. People consume and live as if there is no tomorrow (pun). They are long beyond the point of living in the Now. Those that own the media have for long been intent on meeting their goals. Our Founding Fathers have sensed what was coming and almost everyone was assassinated.
People who are used to relax before the tv, are long beyond of understanding where we find ourselves today: human misery is entertainment and it is likely the watcher is later being watched; therefore manipulation of masses of people is possible and increased constantly.
TV steals the soul. But once caught in the game they give themselves away to be used and awareness is an unknown state from the on. These are the last days. You can only hope for release into the New Age of Peace and Love by shutting off the media boxes, doing helpful service to the hungry and needy without expecting any return.
We are humans and have to prove it that way.

On the flipside the money based society vies for our attention. Hollywood and TV needs our attention for their industry. Politicians or political systems need our attention for their industry. This is why so many people get ripped apart or fragmented. George Harrison bravely disclosed the methodologies of the predator/prey culture in the Cloud Nine song "Devel's Radio" and the title track to his last LP "Brainwashed".

It really boils down to the fact that one has to keep on top of things as well as possible and it is not easy. Other people, as I have observed, shrug shoulders and buy GMO food. One can also be in denial or as well take in the TV with its myriad ways to take over your mind.
One must do one's best but that is subject to desire/interpretation. Ultimately it is up to the individual. There have always been snake oil merchants but you do not have to be their customer.
In matters of life and misery and resulting early death, however, it is obvious what is to be done, if that awareness is present. Mostly, it is not, the way things are going.
These are my thoughts on life on the planet at the present.
