Need Help for Itchy Skin All Over

Posted By Helen (Melbourne Victoria ) on 08/25/2022

For the past 2.5 years I have had itchy skin all over. The itch can start anywhere and if scratched I cannot stop to the point of tearing my skin and creating sores and lesions. I have tried everything ie giving up super, all processed foods, alcohol etc. I have seen Dermatologists, Neurogist, hypnotherapy, medicinal cannibis etc etc nothing has helped. Has anyone else out there experienced this?

Helen,

Given the length of time (2.5 years) you have had itchy skin all over your body, one possible condition you should have your doctor test you for is kidney disease, as itchy skin is a common symptom with kidney disease that can affect the whole body and since it is a serious and potentially life threatening condition, it would be a very good idea for your doctor to do the appropriate testing to eliminate it as a cause.

If it does turn out to be chronic kidney disease (CKD), you may find the new article I wrote about CKD of interest. Here is a link to that article :

Helen, I'm not trying to scare you, but it is worth testing for that possibility to try to eliminate it as a possible cause because of the seriousness of CKD. There are other causes such as allergies, but it seems like a good idea for your doctor to test for it and it is a simple blood test that he will combine with your information to determine if you may have CKD. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Art,

I have had numerous blood tests for everything from syphilis to scabies and everything in between but nothing has come up regarding CKD. I have also read that this could be the problem but as none of the experts mentioned it I just assumed I had been tested for it, so I will definitely get one done. As I am otherwise fit and healthy I guess I would have also had some of the symptoms but nevertheless I appreciate your feedback and will follow through.

Kind regards

Helen

Ok! Let me first say that I don’t know for certain what is the cause in your case but have had experience with a prolonged period of extreme skin itchiness to the point of not being able to sleep through the night; waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to get back to sleep because of itchiness. Let me tell you of the steps I took to control and eventually almost eliminate the problem. I treated the problem as a “systemic” fungal infection. The key here is “systemic” since if the fungus is all through your body it can manifest itself in different forms which are called by different medical names for different locations but are basically the same problem. Ok, enough theory.

The initial treatment to reduce the irritation and calm things down is topical treatment with coconut oil, which is antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial. I would basically slather extra virgin coconut oil over my complete body (scalp to toes) before bed and this would allow a decent night’s sleep.(Obviously with special bedding to contain the oily mess).

Secondly, wash all affected areas (whole body to start with) with ordinary borax, (again antifungal and antibacterial).

Initially, I would use a half cup of borax in a bath and soak for 45 minutes, but later as things improved, I could just sort of wet a small amount of borax in my hand and scour the affected area to eliminate the itchiness.

Finally, with things under control, I found I could “pretreat” a recurring problem area by using Tea Tree Oil ointment or antiseptic cream. These are very mild and only about 4 percent actual Tea Tree Oil so there was no worry with sensitive skin areas.

I eliminated the main problem over a year ago, but still would encounter flaky skin behind my knees or a dandruff outbreak or a toenail discoloration on occasion. These are all the same root cause and are treated every couple of days for a week with borax washings and nighttime Tea Tree Oil ointment to eliminate the problem and prevent the problem from spreading.

Hope this helps

Hello there, thank you for you comments! For quite some time I slathered myself with coconut oil, which while it was soothing, didn’t really give me any relief. I will do try the borax bath and see if that helps. Once again thank you for taking the time to write your reply. Kind regards Helen

Hello there, thank you for your comments!

For quite some time I slathered myself with coconut oil, which while it was soothing, didn't really give me any relief. I will do try the borax bath and see if that helps. Please note that in the beginning, any of these "treatments" (coconut oil, tea tree oil ointment/cream) required 3 continuous days of use before any meaningful results were noted. The borax bath and/or borax scouring of specific areas results were more immediate. Also note that this "systemic" infection will retreat from areas you treat and will expand in other more vulnerable areas if you let up your attack. This type of treatment can help but you need to simultaneously do things to help improve your immune system to really attack the root cause. The fungus infection became "systemic" in the first place because of a weak immune system. Kidneys and liver in particular need support. Please keep us posted. Regards.

Helen,

If you decide to have the kidney test, also have them do a liver enzyme test as the liver can also be a cause of itchy skin all over.
